The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 5—Page 22

120 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 5—Page 22

A son of a demon’s gotta do what he’s gotta do.

FUN NEWS: So for a few years now, a bunch of y’all have been wanting me to put my comics up on Comixology, the premiere site/app for reading comics on your mobile devices. Well, they just approved The Young Protectors Volume One. You can find it here:

https://www.comixology.com/The-Young-Protectors-Vol-1-Engaging-The-Enemy/digital-comic/456660

They also sent me an email saying they’re going to approve Artifice—I’ll let you know when that’s up too. 🙂

So! A whole lotta demons just burst out of the Gate. Flyboy is trying to reach out to his buddy, Kyle, but it looks like demon-Kyle’s not having it. Could this be the end of the line for our heroes—and Earth?

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • I hope Kyle has a plan that he’s keeping close to the breast.

  • Cydney Sabin

    Uh oh…

  • Hmm, and what is that which Kyle needs to do? Somewhere in that statement I hope there’s a possitive answer.

  • davefragments

There is so much action on this page – Spectacular.
The action is great. The meanings are complex.
    The artwork is glorious.

    • Saxon_Brenton

A particularly nice assortment of demon shapes in panel two (although perhaps we could have had more sorts of wings – insect wings, feathered wings (burning and non-burning), skeletal wings, helicopter blades).

      • davefragments

        They have bat wings —
bats are the flying rats of the world, scavengers, carrion eaters, and evil rotten beasts

        • ….

Bats are cute and adorable and eat nasty insects

          • davefragments

Oh, don’t get me started about my nightmares…
            Field Mice, OK,
            Rats, no… Sorry, I shriek loudly…

        • actually, doves are the rats of the air, and bats are quite useful insect devourers…

          • davefragments

I know my fears are not sane but that’s why they are my fears.
And around here — crows eat the carrion left as road kill and peck open the garbage to get at bones and spoiled leftover meat.

          • go to any railway station in the world (well, maybe outside aseptical singapore) and look what’s picking up the vomit. Crows: useful and clever. Doves – double faillure.

          • davefragments

            I don’t kill anything.
I mouse-proofed my house after a minor invasion and left the outside critters do what they please. The hawks like them too much.
I will however kill the grubs in my lawn that attracted a hungry skunk. I never chase skunks.

          • Klaus

            Doves and gulls both.

        • Klaus

Mammals are small and mostly active at night. If they move about by day, they get eaten by dinosaurs. So it was in the mesozoic age. In the air, it is still so.

  • Saxon_Brenton

    Ominous statement.
[peers closely] Is it me, or does he look like he might just maybe starting to crack a smile? Nasty smile, of course, but maybe he’s no longer in physical pain from metabolisng hellfire.

  • joshsusser

    That last panel…!

    • It had me smiling when Adam sent the page to me. 🙂

      • Pietro7

A quote seems appropriate here: “When the Dungeonmaster smiles, it’s already too late.”
        But for who?

  • Mitch continues to be too precious. ^_^

  • Mitch grabbing those two demons by the wings. I’m hoping to see him use those two demons sorta like nanchukas on next page xD

  • Nate

I think Kyle needs a hug.

    Heck, Nate-hugs™ for everyone!

    • davefragments

      You trademarked your HUGS!

  • I have to give so many props to Adam and Vero for these pages. I love the art on each and every page, but pages with so many small and multiple action/character details… Wow for drawing them, but as much also putting so many ‘exploding’ color details to them. Wow.

And these pages just keeps coming <3

  • Cman65

Quick somebody give that man a kiss

    • I’d volunteer, but not sure it would have other than a big wtf-effect, with me being female. That reaction could be useful too though, so.. yes, I volunteer 😉

      • Kate G

        Hmmmm, have Flyboy kiss him?

        • could help, if we remember what cory can do when he get’s angry – but he’s not here.

          • Curt Clark

I ship Flyboy and Cory hard…but in a lfie-or-death situation, with the fate of the planet at stake, a kiss from a bestie doesn’t half-suck as an alternative to Armageddon.

      • Curt Clark

I’m rememberig what happened when Donna kissed the Tenth Doctor in “The Wasp And The Unicorn”.

If nothing else his face afterwards would be HILARIOUS.

  • Adam Black

    uh-oh.

I might know what Kyles planning.
Take as much hellfire as possible, then shoot it back through the gate…
    Then walk through it himself.
Sucking back Laampros and the demons.

    Think Buffy “the gift”

    • Curt Clark

Dammit. Cue the flashbacks…Christoph Beck’s “Sacrifice” score coming on in my head doesn’t help matters either.

If I cry at my computer, IT’S YOUR FAULT.

  • Kate G

    Detail, the glorious details!

And I’m so tickled at the bottom left panel because it looks like Mitch is using a demon for a jumping rope. I can hear it in my head, “99 demons jumping on the bed. One fell off and bumped his head…”

    • Pietro7

Mama called the Doctor and the Doctor said
“No more demons jumping on the bed!”

      🙂

  • davefragments

I wonder if Kyle read Spooky’s mind and they have some plan together?

    • Adam Black

Um thinking hes planning on using what Annihilator told them.
except by leveling up he doesnt have to push Laampros back through

he can send his own hellfire through , and walk through himself

      • davefragments

        Blast the portal shut, maybe

  • camelotcrusade

My favorite demon is the chubby little flying snake. Did he eat too many hell hamsters? Yes he did. (use your baby voice with kissy sounds)

    • Skudplastr

      This just made my night!
Also I love the diversity in Hell.

    • Ansel

I’m torn between him and the dinosaur

  • Ethan

I don’t think he’s intentionally being the cutie demon he was born to be to help his dad rule the earth, I think he’s going to like, overpower his dad somehow, and drive them back to hell, but he doesn’t want Laamporos to know… or something.

The whole “this is what I need to do” clued me in 😉

    • Klaus

      We shall see.

  • Ansel

I’d be pretty stoked if Kyle has gotten control of himself, and will be launching his full demon power back at the gate once it finishes loading.

  • Mariona

Kyle has a plan! At least I hope he has a plan.
    Please have a plan, Kyle!
(Hello everyone, I have time to comment again. ^^)

    • Klaus

And that plan is to burn the Earth to the ground.

  • Zephyr10101

    I want evil Kyle still..

  • Maybe now would be a good time for Duncan to attempt to fix his damn mess?

    • Klaus

Even if Duncan has recovered his powers, he still has Laampros’ mark.

      • Question is: is the contract considered fulfilled with Laampy setting
foot on earth? in that case Duncan should have lost his Demon-tattoo –
        and be young and healthy.

        • Klaus

          One can always hope.

        • Curt Clark

That might be why we haven’t seen him of late.

The question is, how young is ‘young’? I don’t remember if there were any specifics about his age in the contract. Duncan’s not going to be much good to anyone if he’s in his tweens (or younger).

      • But does the mark mean he can’t interfere? And has the mark served its purpose now that Laampy has arrived from hell?

    • timemonkey

He’d have to wake up first.

  • Cecilie Muldkjær Bredesen

….. Im in a dilemma…. Dont know who to root for….. I dont know why, but i kinda want the demons to win…. But i know i should be rooting for the heroes…. HELP!

  • Sapfo

The water and fire has an amazing flow to it. Well done creative team of TYP.

  • Jeldenil

I had to zoom in on the demons in panel 2 (viewing the page on my phone atm) to fully see and understand all those amazing, creative demon-shapes. I’m sorry, Adam, for not paying enough attention to your art on them before. They are stunning.

  • Klaus

In popular science books about life, taxons are often introduced with statements like “Crustaceans are wonderfully diverse”. For some reason this page reminded me of this.

  • Praying along with everyone else that what he “needs to do” is absorb enough power so they can turn the tide and get a victory.

  • Malin Ryden

I just reread the whole thing, and honestly, Kyle’s comment on the very first page seems awfully prescient right now…

    • Pietro7

You mean the statement “Oh, to Hell with it!”, don’t you? Urrrggggh. Please be wrong about that. Please, please, please.

  • Toli Bera

Does our little matchstick have himself a plan? or possibly a ploy? siphon of papa’s power to make him weaker, then usurp his place in this domain as demons do? :O

  • motordog

I’m wondering if Kyle has decided to ‘fight fire with fire’…in other words, he’ll sacrifice his humanity, embrace his demonic nature, and THEN use his new power to kick his dad’s ass. Perhaps then, once he’s the new boss of demons, he’s planning to simply cancel the invasion and return to hell forever, thereby saving his friends and the whole world.

I’m not saying this is how it’s going to turn out, mind you…I’m sure his teammates will figure out some way to save the day with Kyle’s soul intact.

I also can’t help but feel sorry for Paul…he must feel pretty useless right at this moment, since he can’t really fight the flying demons. Maybe the Commander can give him some mission?

Edit: Reading down the comments a bit, I see others also have this theory, lol.

    • Klaus

That is a very risky plan. Turning demonic might well work just as Laampros expects. He could lose all empathy with humans. We, who are reading a superhero story, know that this is not the way is works, at least not in the long run. But Kyle does not.

    • KatKaleen

That was my theory, too. But it’s possible that our minds and hearts just WANT to believe that Kyle will not stray to the dark side… or rather bright side. Because FIRE. I honestly have no idea how this is going to turn out, Alex is full of surprises in his story-telling.

    • Curt Clark

I’m hoping for this to be the case as well. I keep thinking of Dark Phoenix, but Kyle’s coming off more like Magik, formerly of the New Mutants (and now the Official Crazy Lady of whatever X-Men team she’s on).

Like old-school Illyana, Kyle’s caught in conflict between embracing his inner desires and staying true to his vision of himself.

Heir to a vast hellish dimension, caught between two worlds and two conflicting desires — the human drive to be a good person, and the desire for the power that his heritage gives him, as well as a taste for the corruption that that power comes with. And that’s even before we get into the sex thing.

With Duncan depowered (and there being too much baggage there to try again anyway), only Spooky might survive an encounter with Kyle’s hellfire during intimacy, and Kyle doesn’t even know if Spooks is into him. So with humanity comes an enforced chastity, unless Spooky returns his feelings and they can succeed where Spooky and the Commander failed.

    • xLizardx

You took the words right out of my mouth 🙂

    • Juliette Leroux

      Yes, that’s my take, too.

  • Tristan Black Wolf

So… anyone remember David Cronenburg’s “Scanners”? That’s my bet, and it appears to be shared, at least to some degree. ^_^

  • EvilGerbil

Maybe he’s gathering just enough power to bust open the hostage box and let Spooky offload the souls he’s carrying.

    • Curt Clark

Fire on diamond? Even if he could somehow damage it — I don’t know of anything that can actually damage a diamond like that — it would char-broil the bodies inside if it didn’t straight-up incinerate them. Spooky’s holding their souls, so it won’t KILL them, but they won’t have anywhere to go anymore.

  • gumboluvr

Personally, I wish Flyboy would swoop down and give Kyle a kiss and a hug (risking the burns), to show him that they (he *grin*) love Kyle no matter who his daddy is. Maybe it would give Kyle the strength to overcome his daddy’s influence and allow him to send all of the beasts back thru the portal.

    • Yes. ^_^

    • Curt Clark

      As mentioned below:

I ship Flyboy and Cory hard…but in a life-or-death situation, with the
fate of the planet at stake, a kiss from a bestie doesn’t half-suck as
      an alternative to Armageddon.

  • Jason Moon

On the Comixology news, I can only give an authentic “EEEEEEEEEEEEE!”

“All we have to do is keep those demons out of the air!” Oh, is THAT all?

Is Kyle succumbing to Daddy Laampy, or is he trying to get past his defenses?

    • Curt Clark

      My guess? Both.

      • Jason Moon

The down side is that Daddy Laampy has not only had practice at this, he also has a better idea as to what signs to look for if Kyle tries anything. Talk about a stacked deck! 🙂

        • Curt Clark

I don’t know…way he’s been talking, Laampros seems pretty assured Kyle’s going to go full-on Dark Side. The older you get, the more prone you are to hubris, especially when you’re old and powerful.

  • Steven Higgins

Please let him bast the demons in the next page.

  • Great news, congratulations!

  • Midwestmutt

Lampros has been a surprisingly good and supportive father in his way since he and Kyle met but I think he is in for some son Father-Son friction.

    • Curt Clark

I read that very, VERY differently than you intended it…possibly due to Laampros being a complete and total creeper around Kyle.

      • Midwestmutt

        Tricky language, that english.

  • Maus Merryjest

Way to go Kyle, proving Tsunami right. :p

  • Kensworth Ebbinghause

tell me its over throwing daddy dearest and resurrecting your ex-lover to be your concubine to serve at your feet while you take into the family business of taking over the world…bc i would love to see that

  • davefragments

The severe cold went away today and it warmed up into the 30’s {°F} at night and the 40’s in the day.

    • Squishy

Glad to hear it’s warming up a little. Still really wet here.

      • davefragments

I checked the week ahead because I have a tickets to hear the Symphony this Sunday and it’s not going back to the severe cold.

    • stickfigurefairytales

We had lots of rain and freezing rain today, making everything into very slippery gross slush.

      • davefragments

That was late last night for us down here.

  • davefragments

    Hi, how are you tonight?
    What’s up?

    • Disqus is being weird. I had to refresh to see new comments

      • davefragments

        same here

Disqus has been weird for me since last Friday. I can’t get rid of certain ads without a total block.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Hi Doki! I’m having the same problem.

    • Saxon_Brenton

Great. I’ve just arrived back in the last quarter hour from a two day trip with Dad, travelling up onto the tablelands of New England and visiting tourist sites at Walcha and Armidale. (We were going to go into a canoing spot at the Nymboida national park for a swim, but we seemed to have missed the turnoff on the way through. As a result I’m home early, in time for camping 😛

      • davefragments

        Welcome to camping.
This was my day to do mundane things. Put away groceries, fold laundry, wash the (blush) weekend dishes, and listen to the news.

    • stickfigurefairytales

I’m very tired. Might have to just say a quick hello and then go to bed, since I feel like I might be coming down with a cold.

      • davefragments

        Hi Stick.
All my friends had colds last week. I avoided all of them.

        • stickfigurefairytales

          Good move.

      • Hope you feel better soon. I have so far avoided what felt like a beginning cold three times in a month. Don’t know if I just keep pushing the time it breaks out, or if I’m managing to fend of one cold after another.

        • stickfigurefairytales

          Go you!

    • Squishy

I went to the dentist today. There was an issue with one of my fillings :/

      • davefragments

        I pity you.
My dentist hates me because I yelled at him one visit.

        • Squishy

I really like my dentist. I’ve been seeing him as long as I can remember. There is an aviary that you can look at from the appointment room. And he has a great sence of humor.

      • SchalaRenee

Dentists scare me. I have a severe dental-phobia…everything looks like needles, and just seeing a needle is enough for me to pass out.

  • Pietro7

Slipped and fell on some ice, am very uncomfortable right now from bruises and muscle strains but determined to see tonight’s page. Gotta know what happens!

    • stickfigurefairytales

Oh no, I hope you heal up quickly!

    • davefragments

Falling is never good. Take care about that.

    • Ouch! Hope it’s gone soon.

    • Heal quickly!

  • davefragments

  • Have slept less than an hour, since I couldn’t fall asleep, and was back up at 3am watching Obama’s speech. Wanted to watch the full thing and not just main points, and for some reason no Danish tv showed it live. Only had reporters outside.

Was only US media allowed inside for this one? Maybe due to room space vs. #of reporters.

    • stickfigurefairytales

Aw, poor DanishWolf! It was an excellent speech though, wasn’t it?

      • Wonderful. I’m not American, but will miss him as president.

  • davefragments
  • And just as I posted previous comment, new page is up http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ch5-page-23/

    • davefragments

      My disqus isn’t updating comments.
Disqus has been goofy all day

      • So it’s not just mine. Good to know.

        • davefragments

          Glad to hear, too.
I might shut down the entire computer overnight, just to force a reset. Disqus is notorious for being messed up.

          • You could, but when Disqus acts up, nothing else but wait it out.

  • Justin White

I have no idea what s about to happen!
