The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 5—Page 21

Yeah, what about Spooky and Kyle?

Happy New Year, everyone! Last year I did a crazy amount of conventions, so this year I’m going to mostly be keeping it low-key and staying near home base. But I am happy to say that I’ve been invited to be the official 2017 guest of Yaoi North, May 26-28th in Toronto, Canada! Yaoi North is the “East Coast version of Yaoi Con” that has been part of Anime North for over 10 years. While there are 18+ events, it looks like the majority of panels and activities will be open to everyone.

I’ve heard great things about it and if you’d like a chance to meet me, say hi, maybe pick up some signed books or posters and hang out with a bunch of other LGBTQ comics fans, you should definitely check it out! Looks like anyone who gets into Anime North will get to go to Yaoi North and the fee is quite reasonable ($60 for the weekend). But attendance is capped and they are expecting it to sell out well in advance, so it’d be a good idea to get your tickets now if you think you can make it. 🙂

So! Commander is redefining the rules of engagement. But her teammates ask some good question. What will this new plan mean for Kyle and for Spooky?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • davefragments

Kyle is going to burn Laampros in anger but in-between just where is that military? Are they stupid and dumb? Are they incompetent or unprepared? Or did they thing it was all a joke? Nothing like the cavalry being late.

    • Foye

Can’t be late if the cavalry just never comes…

…Meanwhile at the pizza restaurant, they’re still talking about that one HELL of that wrong number situation.

    • Klaus

It is only about an hour since Amanda said that it would take at least an hour for the military to get here. Also, the cavalry does not do the heros’ work for them. First the heroes save the day, leaving themselves in a hopeless situation. Then the cavalry saves the heroes.

  • Um… Good question?

  • Paul, I don’t know if “hell” is the proper word to be using here. o.O

  • Saxon_Brenton

So! Commander is redefining the rules of engagement.
To be fair, Commander is keeping her eyes on the ball. She’s always been clear that her team’s purpose is to delay the bad guys until the military can arrive and use whatever force is necessary to take care of the situation. Various setbacks have not changed that end goal, only the specific tactics needed to achieve it She’s being flexible within her mission parameters.

  • Squishy

What about Kyle and Spooky? Well, it seems that Kyle is getting all fired up and Spooky is just above it all.

  • Saxon_Brenton

And on the topic of when the military will be arriving (panel 3), it seems to me that HQ loosing contact with the advance force is even more likely to make HQ pay attention, and start bringing even more resources to bear, such as satellite recon (if they’re not using that already) and if things get really desperate, missiles armed with nukes.

  • stickfigurefairytales

Did Paul’s broken arm just get better?

    • With that amount of adrenaline he may have simply forgotten about it. For which he will pay later, when things calm down.

    • Klaus

Fluke was not sure that it was broken. Maybe is wasn’t.

    • Curt Clark

This is what I get for ot scrollling down…I literally JUST asked the same thing further up. :p

My wiorking theory, posited at the time, is that Fluke was talking about something other than his arm. Maybe his powers’ ratio of good-luck to bad-luck?

  • Well, Mitch at least is still worried about Kyle’s welfare. I just hope Kyle realises that.

  • Mitch – What the heck did I miss that Kyle was left out of that statement?

  • stickfigurefairytales

I still think my idea of throwing rocks at Laampros has some merit.

    • davefragments

      very big rocks

    • Will Parkinson

It’s a big rock. Can’t wait to tell my friends. They don’t have a rock this big.

  • Saxon_Brenton

Speculation: In the final panel Red Hot’s body language makes it look as though he’s reveling in the power as Laampros throws hellfire at him. But that means that Laampros is still delaying in his stated intention of destroying Spooky-the-abomination.
Is it possible that Red Hot is actually fighting his father in panel 5 and forcing Laampros to react.

  • You know, right about now I wouldn’t even mind PP showing up, declaring she wants her part of the deal, if it delays Laampy’s demonification of Kyle a little longer. Enough for him to get a break and hopefully come to his senses faster.

Anni is (hopefully) still alive somewhere behind them, but maybe/probably worse off than PP (after she was knocked out and knocked through a hole). Seeing the reality of what Laampros is doing might even rock her boat, and have her switch sides (hey, it’s a ..possibility).
I’m not sure Laampry is keeping his side of their deal about deviding the world, besides giving youth back, and it’s still unclear exactly what *all* the equipment hidden under the podium was for.

…I can have my little hope… at least until it’s clear that they won’t need her to win. In that case, she can stay the heck away in cave along with Fluffy. Aww, now I kinda miss Fluffy.

    • FrankTargon

Aside from wondering where Duncan is in all of this,
I do wonder why Laampros popped though the portal and didn’t look for Duncan and Sircea.

      • Samurai Jack

Why would Laampros care about them? He’s here, so PP and Duncan obviously did what he wants. If they’re not around to collect payment–or better yet, dead–all the better for him.

        • FrankTargon

That is heartless but he is a demon and he is very bad. He cruel and mean so it also fits that character study.

Sometimes I have this awfully pollyannish view of people.

    • davefragments

Laampros keep a deal with a “parasite”?
Ben Franklin once said that “he who lives on hope dies pharting.”

  • Btw… WHY IS SPOOKY AN ABOMINATION?

I must knooow *lol*. Way to keep that info as a cliffhanger for us, Alex 😉

    • FrankTargon

I think it is the souls that Spooky is holding.
      I’m not sure.

    • motordog

Consider who told us that…he’s an abomination from Laampros’s point of view. He probably considers puppies and butterflies abominations too. XD

On a more serious note, perhaps it’s because Spooky literally went to Hell, and instead of becoming destroyed (or corrupted) by it, he returned strong and still on the side of Good…to someone like red hot daddy, that would certainly count as an ‘abomination’…

      • Klaus

What is Spooky? Nobody knows who his parents were. Did he ever have any?

      • Samurai Jack

Hasn’t Spooky also used celestial magic as well as demonic magic? Spooky might just be the product of a love that dare not speak its name…

    • Kate G

YES! I want to know this answer!

  • camelotcrusade

As an ardent fan of Godzilla and Kaiju movies, I would not bet on the miltary. You’ll get a couple panels with some exploding airplane and tank stomping action, and then “We’re throwing everything we have at him, sir!” before the end.

    • timemonkey

Yes, but Laampros isn’t a metaphore for natural disasters,

      • camelotcrusade

In at least one series the monster is a friend to all children, and in another an alien from outer space. And there’s King Kong who was just minding his own business. Military still failed…

        • davefragments

I don’t think Laampros is friends to anyone.

        • timemonkey

The military has various degrees of success depending on the monster in question. Weaker monsters can be badly hurt and potentially killed while the heavy hitters are too tough for anything fake Japan can throw at them. Hell, I can name at least one time they were actually winning against Godzilla on their own but then someone made a dumb call and wrecked it by pushing things too far and breaking the equipment.

    • davefragments

I do remember that the original King Kong sniffed Faye Wray’s clothing in a most sexual way. It was one of those scenes that you remember.

  • motordog

Interesting that we’ve neither seen or heard anything from Duncan since this all began. Think he’s still flopped over there in the mud, nursing his wounds, or did he take the opportunity to escape? Think he’ll have any part at all in the endgame?

…also, probably too late to ask for requests…but Kyle would look awesome with some demon wings made out of fire!

    • D. G.

Or just grows demon wings. That would be cool.

  • Mary Klemzak

*raises hand and waves it like crazy* Scuse me, hi! What can the military do, that these superkids can’t? Do they have other more powerful superheroes in their arsenal?

    • I missile or two for Lasmpy, or bullets could do it on the little demons. It’s about weapons, probably more than powers.

      • Mary Klemzak

*shrugs* Go for it guys and gals! More power to you all.

  • Skudplastr

Is Kyle growing in that last panel!?

    • PreludeToA

      GOD I HOPE SO

  • Taddy

Commander has a very nice ass.

    -thumbs up- ^_~

    • Jeldenil

That was one of the first things I noticed too….

  • Jojolightningfingers

man… way to cocktease us about kyle going full demon guys. /sullen clap/

  • Jeldenil

Amanda has quite some faith in the military. Here’s for hoping it’s not in vain.

  • bronakopdin

    >////////////////////////<
    Amanda sure is confident in that!!! Let's hope this trust won't be in vain ;___;
… and I feel real pain watching the last panel T___T

  • karmakat

“i DON’T KNOW yet DAMN IT. I AM THINKING GUYS!!!”
wouldn’t Fluke broken arm have recharged his “batteries”? and if it IS broken like he said…HOW is he moving it like that?

    • D. G.

He doesn’t look injured or in pain at all.

      • karmakat

exactly my point. especially since a few pages back, after kyle’s hand slap he said he thought his arm was broken.

so either he was being a drama queen, or something…doesn’t add up.

        • D. G.

Maybe the initial pain was so bad, he thought it was broken. But was *lucky* it wasn’t.

          • karmakat

            yeah maybe
Fluke is a…different one for sure.

  • Zephyr10101

evil kyle arc is lookin pretty likely now

  • Toli Bera

    “What about spooky and kyle”
“They’re right there, and right there.”

    • Curt Clark

I’m flashing back to the Xavier Protocols…it seems like the kind of thing the Commander would hate to do but see the necessity for regardless.

  • Sapfo

First comment of the year… Need to make this a good one…. a real good one, that brings hope and love to people around the world….NICE BOOTY!… I think my job is done here. Happy new year everyone! ^^

And thank you for a wonderful firework page~~

    • D. G.

      :). Ha!

  • Juliette Leroux

Hmmm… Maybe the military is actually occupied with that situation where all the other superheroes were. Remember; it seemed to be a class A emergency. It may be possible that all hell broke lose outside of the bubble our heroes are in now.

    • Squishy

The crisis of colliding trans-world identities? (Had to say it, that name makes me giggle a little every time). I don’t think Commander would be so certain that help was coming if the millitary really was tied up with some pre-existing threat. Remember we first heard about that a week ago in comic time.

      • Juliette Leroux

I’m sure she wouldn’t but emergencies happen.

      • Samurai Jack

It was also taking place in space, was it not? Most of the heroes were off world, which is a bit beyond the scope of the military it seems…

        • Saxon_Brenton

Yep, Fluke’s comments back at the warehouse indicated that the Crisis was off-planet.
However, the backhistory given in the intro to the trade paperback indicates that the superteams have heavy (albeit lessening with time) government control, and a large number are defacto military teams. Although the military proper might not have the wherewithal to send large number of conventional combat forces into space, they might be well-briefed by the supers.

That creates a conundrum. On the one hand, the military might have a large part of their planet-based resources tied up in preparation for if the Crisis arrives at Earth. On the other hand, you would think if they have lots of resources on orange alert just in case of some superhuman weirdness, that this would make them more likely to be able to scramble against the current demon invasion.

          • Samurai Jack

Many thanks for the backstory. I don’t know how I missed the trade paperback. Somehow I missed it here and on the Patreon page–not that I actually look at that all that much. Now I’ll have to find it…

    • Curt Clark

Well, all hell seems to be breaking loose INSIDE the bubble, too, so…:p

  • Jason Moon

I don’t think she’s had enough time to plan too far ahead.

  • Curt Clark

So, Fluke seems to be doing pretty okay for a guy whose arm just broke.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m relieved he’s not worse off, but it does seem strange that he barely even seems in pain. Unless it really WASN’T his arm that Kyle broke…?

    • timemonkey

Given his powers and how he charges himself I’m guessing he’s fairly used to pain.

      • Curt Clark

        Eh, good point.

Awesome to hear from you again BTW. 🙂 Haven’t seen you since Y!Gal crashed.

        • timemonkey

I was wondering if that was you. I’ve been patiently waiting for them to finish rebuilding the site. Didn’t think it would take this long.

    • Quetzalcoatlihokipoki

Also, shock. I snapped my elbow in half once, and didn’t feel it for a good hour and a half. When the shock wore off, I was most displeased.

  • D. G.

The demons don’t seem to be attacking the team. I wonder how Commander and team will fare if / when the demons do.

Alex, u have a bit of a dark side. Dontcha?!

  • Kia

Dammit, you’re going to AN this year too? The guest list this year has a lot of people I actually am interested in, but I just can’t seem myself being able to go this year 🙁

PAGE 1 – One page of turning on kitchen appliances
(1.1) Wide shot of Huey in the kitchen, looking at the oven with an irritated expression. On the table there is a prepared roast in a baking pan, and a box of matches.
    Huey: “Hisss!”
(1.2) Wide shot of the kitchen. Dewey pokes his head through the doorway with a ‘You called?’ expression on his face.
    Dewey: “Hisss?”
Huey (inclining his head to point at the oven): “Hisss.”
(1.3) Medium shot of the kitchen. Dewey has come over to where Huey is, in front of the oven. Dewey is looking at the box of matches while Huey shakes his head.
    Dewey (looking at matchbox): “Hisss?”
    Huey (shaking head): “Hisss.”
(1.4) Closeup of the open box of matches, showing it is empty.
(1.5) Medium shot of kitchen. Dewey leans forward and spits a small lick of hellfire into the oven while Huey looks on.
SFX (in small font size): Fwoomf!
(1.6) Medium shot of kitchen. The oven is now turned on, and has little squiggly lines rising above it to indicate it is heating up. Huey is using his tail to adjust the temperature, while looking over his ‘shoulder’ at Dewey with a ‘Thank you’ expression on his face. Dewey has turned to leave, and has a ‘You’re welcome’ smile.
    Huey: “Hisss.”
    Dewey: “Hisss.”

    Asher just lost his head.

    Hi Y’all…
    How’s your Friday going?

    • We are supposed to get a slightly inconveniencing amount of snow, you?

      • davefragments

I had about 2 inches and my brother was out today to snowblow it and throw salt. It wasn’t above 20F and right now it’s 6F … That’s cold. Sunday, I was coughing at the gasoline stench and coughing at the motor exhaust. I hate that. However, regardless of how cold. I will go food shopping Sunday.

    • Saxon_Brenton

Still on summer holidays at the beach. Getting occasional rain showers, which are very welcome considering how low the water tank was getting due to lack of rain during December. Will probably take the dogs for a walk on the beach later.

      • davefragments

        Will you adopt me?
        Please!

    • Squishy

It hasn’t started yet but it’s gonna rain pretty hard here. And I’m going to a convention this weekend. :/ I’m sure I’ll have fun despite the rain.

      • davefragments

        That sounds great.

  • davefragments

you are all so quiet tonight

  • Hi folks 🙂 Ready for the new page besides barely being awake. I’m going to sleep so long, later this morning. Page first though!

    • davefragments

      Hi Danishwolf…
I’ll bet you are warmer than it is at my place

      • I’m offering -13°C outside. I hate it, those 1-5 nights per winter spoil so many plants I could possibly grow in the garden. Well, i guess i was lucky, -18°C were predicted.

        • davefragments

You must be somewhere under that Polar High that settled on NorthEast Europe… I’m guessing

          • yeah, Southern Germany, but it’s moving away faster than some of the models calculated – temperature stopped dropping around midnight, so there are the first few clouds.

          • davefragments

That Polar Vortex moved toward Europe. We had a taste last year.

It changed the Jet stream in the USA and completely altered what I thought I knew of the climate in the USA.

      • Oh, I don’t know. Today has had both day- and night temps below freezing. A little snow outside and slippery as hell somewhere because of some ice storm during the night *brrr*
Been hidden under covers all evening/night. Being outside earlier felt painful because of wind.
Next week should have back to day-temps a little above freezing, but sleet and rain *bleh*

        • davefragments

The high was 19F the current temp is 1F …
My toes hate me. My fingers rebel. My skin dries.
My face ages (well, more than usual)

    • Morning Danish
      *yawns*

  • davefragments

    oooh, PATREON does groovy things

  • davefragments
  • Declan

What’s up with laampy’s fingers on the last panel?

    • davefragments

Spooky’s coat is brown and we see it as Lammpro’s fingers (which are red, really)

      • Declan

Left hand, it looks like he has no thumb

  • Justin White

Kyle, you have to break his will. you have a choice, it may be hard but it’s not impossible, you can break his will and be free.

  • Derkins

things not looking so good o____o
