The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 5—Page 19

234 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 5—Page 19

Not cool, evil devil king….

So! Evil devil kings are evil. Kyle continues to be transformed into his father’s image. And Commander is telling Kyle to just get the heck out of there. Will he listen? Is he even able to listen at this point?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Bad, bad Demon!

  • EEE!

  • Seriously Laampy, leave Kyle alone!!

  • SchalaRenee

So…Kyle is a full demon…I’m guessing Laampros placed him on Earth for exactly this moment. Maybe thinking his son would help make the transition easier for the humans or something? What is Spooky!? I want to know! I still think he’s some type of angelic being, or perhaps a half demon (which would be disgusting to Laampros if he thinks humans mating with demons is wrong).

    • timemonkey

Well he clearly doesn’t since he just said Kyle would eb free to have his way with any human he wanted.

      • SchalaRenee

Hmm. Maybe he’s just opposed to demons making babies with humans, but okay with demons having fun with them? XD

  • I know the colors are WIP, but the minimalist look is kinda cool looking, kinda retro. 🙂

    • Kate G

I just wrote the same thing. Last Unicorn-ish. XD I like it.

    • Juliette Leroux

Agreed. I mean, I like the usual style a lot, but this is interresting.

  • To quote Ron Weasley: Can we panic now?

    • davefragments

I’ve been in full panic mode for all of this chapter.

  • davefragments

Kyle has to find the internal strength to maintain his humanity.

  • davefragments

Spooky must really have some magic that can hurt Laampros.

    • Juliette Leroux

Yes, and that’s the only good thing about this dialogue.

    • camelotcrusade

Either that he’s literally stuffed full of things you don’t want your kid to see.

  • Saxon_Brenton

WIP colour or not, to me it sure looks like Laampros is blasting Red Hot with Kirby-dots in panel 5.

  • Saxon_Brenton

Previously Laampros has seemingly made a contrast between the status of ‘parasite’ and ‘abomination’. This page we have another seeming contrast between ‘human’ and ‘parasite’. Using the speculation that these have precise meanings rather than being random insults, what can we make of this?

I’ll need to go back and check, but my first impression is that ‘parasite’ has been used to describe the superpowered individuals, up until the moment that Laampros discovered something about Spooky bumped him into ‘abomination’ category. Is it possible that that the innate superpowers of the superhumans have been drawing on other-dimensional energies from Laampros’ realm?

    • Squishy

Quite possibly. According to the intro in the first book superpowered people started coming out of the woodwork in the late 60s. We know a group of mages tried to do something presumably with the “wall of blood and pain” between the hell demention and earth. And it seams as though ever since people with arcane abilities have gone crazy (except for Sircea and Spooky). It also seems as though whatever they did might have caused Sircea to loose her eternal youth? I think? (Will have to double check that). It is still unclear what Sircea’s roll was in whatever happened, but given that she looks to be about as old as Duncan (maybe older) and he was one of the first super villains, whatever caused super powered people to apear could also have caused Sircea to age. It could be that the mages were trying to harnes power from hell but it only partially worked. Causing super powered people to apear who draw their power from the hell dimention and causing magic users to go crazy. It’s also possible that Sircea was behind that as well… we know that ever since then the barrier between hell and earth had weakened, enough that Sircea could eventually get Laampros through. Which could have been her play all along because she can harnes power from demons on earth.

      • davefragments

Sircea is 6000 years old. Duncan is merely growing old like all of us.

        • Squishy

On this page she is shown over what appears to be a great span of time and doesn’t seem to age (http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete-ch3-page-60-61/) and on this page she says the the “grey working” had weakened her (http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete-ch3-page-51/)

          • davefragments

I thought of her saying “weakening” meant that her powers were weaker and she was no longer able to pretend that she was a god to the mere humans.

          • Squishy

It’s possible, in which case the “grey working” might have happened a very long time ago. But if that were the case, and magic wielding crazies have been wondering around for a couple centuries, then why would the earliest evidence of superpowered people be from the mid 20th century as the book 1 intro suggests? You would think that insane arcana users poping up every so often for a couple centuries wouldn’t go un-noticed. But if the “grey working” was more recent then it would make sense given Sircea’s apparent age vs. actual age that she lost her youth as a result of the “grey working” (also something about that title REALLY makes me suspect I might be on to something here) 😉 and if the “grey working” was recent and Sircea was pretending to godhood up until it happened then she would probably be widely known even in modern times and there is evidence in the bonus stories that this isn’t the case. But the fact that Sircea is NOT well know but also that crazy magic users probably haven’t been wondering around for centuries makes me wonder what exactly Sircea has been up to for the last couple centuries of “modern civilization”. It’s posible that Sircea has been keeping the crazy magic users quiet (if they have been around a while).

          • davefragments

I haven’t thought about Sircea and the Grey Working that way. Could be. Could be.

  • LimpBiskit

ARGH I’m tempted to go away for about 2 months just so the suspense will let me live 😛
Seriously though, nice job! Can’t wait for the next page.

    • davefragments

It will be an early New Year’s gift.

      • LimpBiskit

Oh, every page of this has been a gift.

        • davefragments

I love the artwork and colors.
I can’t say enough nice things about them.

    • timemonkey

You think not seeing the updates for two months will reduce the suspense? XD

      • LimpBiskit

        gaaaaah let me dream 😛

  • Laampros is just trying to be a good dad….

Still not forgiving you for what you said about Spooky though or your repeated attempts to cook Mitch. -_-

  • Human *or* parasite? So Laampros does distinguish between them?

Given that so far Laampros seems to have been telling the truth as he perceives it, I wonder what dangers he thinks Kyle needs to be protected from?

  • Kate G

Even with just the work-in-progress colors, the colors are beautiful. There’s something kind of special about the WIP colors in a way. They kind of bring back those 80s/90s movies like The Last Unicorn and I have serious nostalgia here. I kind of like it (although, yes, I know, it doesn’t fit the rest of the comic.)

  • motordog

Question…do we know anything about Kyle’s mother?

    • So far not even a tiny clue.

      • Pietro7

Which has me filled with suspense, because I can’t believe that she won’t show up sooner or later. I kind of hope it’s sooner – Kyle really needs some sensible-Mom talk right now, and I’m not sure that Amanda can get through!

        • Hikaru Takemori

But who’s to say Kyle’s mom is any better than his dad? Until we meet her anything is possibile

  • PreludeToA

I actually like how minimalistic the art work is!

  • Saxon_Brenton

Oh! And note that this is the second page where Laampros has delayed his threat to destroy Spooky because of his deep-seated need to talk too freaking much.

    • Squishy

      Monologueing, it’s the villian’s curse.

    • Madock345

WHICH WE’RE ALL TOTALLY OKAY WITH ALEX

    • camelotcrusade

Poor boss monsters… they’re desperate to talk to anyone who will listen to them. You always have to sit through at least a couple frames… spacebar isn’t even skipping it!

  • Squishy

Hmmm, considering that both Sircea and Spooky are the only people who can use magic (and stay sane), and Sircea planned on absorbing power from demons and she has lived a remarkably long time, and the moment Laampros got a good look at Spooky Laampros identified Spooky as something dangerous… I wonder if whatever “dangerous” non-human non-“parasite” thing that Spooky is somehow relates to the demon power absorption and longevity that Sircea has.

    • Jeldenil

Are you suggesting they are related somehow?

      • Squishy

Mostly I think it’s possible that they get their power the same way or would be the same type of thing in Laampros’s eyes. Whatever he defines as an “abomination”. Just in that what Sircea can do sounds like the sort of thing Laampros might consider dangerous.

        • Hikaru Takemori

That Sircea had to flee might have saved her life then.

Whatever puts Spooky in the abomination category can’t be “magic” as a whole, it certainly is involved in getting Laampros to Earth, so there has to be a difference between Sircea and Spooky.

Besides it would be mighty inconvenient for the long lived Sircea not to know “magic” is something Laampros really does not like. It would put quite a dent in her plan to become eternaly young again.

          • Squishy

Well if Sircea did suspect Laampros might view her as dangerous I think she is probably cunning enough not to tip her hand. It took close inspection for Laampros to determine that Spooky is an “abomination” and Spooky’s helpless. I’m even starting to wonder if that might be part of the reason she had Duncan make the deal with Laampros instead of finding a way to do it herself. She had been planning this through “intermediaries” I wouldn’t put it past her to have another way of getting to hell herself but sending Duncan instead because it was less risky for her.

          • I am not entirely certain of Laampros feelings toward PP other than less than fond as he called her a sow.

          • Hikaru Takemori

Yes, if she knew or suspected she would stay out of his sight. Now we have to wait and see if those two will ever meet so we can know for cretain.

  • Stephen Hutchison

I’m beginning to feel some pacing problems here.

  • Madock345

Actually really digging the WIP colors. Especially that first panel. Not that I would want the whole comic like this, but it’s definitely a cool effect.

  • Aitsuki

Poor Kyle…. this must be tearing him apart. He wants to be good, he wants to be a hero and to protect his friends… but at the same time? Laampros… he’s sort of being Dad of the Year in his own demony way. He’s genuinely offering Kyle something that Kyle’s yearned for all his life… he can be open about himself, his powers and sexuality. He’d finally have his father, never be taken advantage of again, he would rule the entire world with his father. Plus, with the demon power flooding him, I’m sure every word out of Laampros’ mouth sounds more and more appealing…

  • Juliette Leroux

    RUN Kyle RUN!
And also, what pleasure in satisfying your lust with someone who doesn’t have lust for you? You wouldn’t like it Kyle, thtat’s not what you’re craving for.

    • Ember

One of the MANY things Laampy has gotten wrong is that he can’t change who Kyle seems to be at his core: a hero who wouldn’t hurt someone to satisfy his own desires.

  • Jeldenil

Parents trying to set you up with a friend you only ever saw as platonic. How embarrassing.

  • bronakopdin

………… yes Kyle, please just run >///////////////__>

  • Fay onyx

Maybe someone should do a screen shot of the work in progress colors or Alex can save a copy of them somewhere. Once the finished colors go up everyone is going to be reading the comments wondering desperately what the work in progress colors were like that everyone spent so much time talking about how cool they were.

    • I did a screen shot yesterday, just after page was up. I used to have a folder with all of these, from the whole comic, but I’m on a tablet now, because my computer broke. I lost my folder.

      • Juliette Leroux

Oh, that’s a real shame… And here I spent the day complaining that I lost my music folder and I have to redo it entirely from my – extensive – CD collection (yes I’m old). But I can actually remake it so it’s just time lost. I feel for you!

        • I may have a few on my computer, once I get it fixed. Most of it was on computer prior to this one. When that one broke completely a couple years ago it was a big hit, because my external harddisk decided it wanted to follow suit at same time. I cried buckets.
Ecxept for about half my ebook collection (saved on USB), a few things, and some stuff friends could help me get back again, because they had copies, I lost 5 years of stuff. Pics, folders, books, everything. Incl. my extensive unreplacable collection of art stuff from WIP comics/screenshots from livestreams I attended, downloaded (web)comics that either is gone from internet or was offered for short times. Various things like that.
The art stuff was the worst loss. That still hurts.

          • Juliette Leroux

            Augh. So sorry…

      • Kate G

Did you happen to get the whole page in one screen shot?

        • Didn’t screenshoot it. I just saved the image/page. Means It’s the whole page. Always do it this way when I can.

Edit: realize now that I used the ‘screenshot’ word in previous comment. Just called it that because OC did.

  • Adam Black

I hate to say it, but I miss Duncan.

    This scene needs him,

    • Keinett Rodriguez

      i know right?

  • KatKaleen

Before I read Alex’ text, I thought the colors were this way on purpose… I think they make it more intense, showing how Kyle’s perception is altered, how the world starts to seem bland and insignificant… Don’t get me wrong, the artwork is stunning and I’m sure it will be even more beautiful when finished, but I like it the way it is. Like in a horror game, when the color scheme suddenly shifts or the transition to the otherworld in Silent Hill.

    • I agree, I thought the colors changed on purpose!

    • Keinett Rodriguez

it hitted me really hard, i thought alex din’t have enough time for today’s panel

    • Alex always tells us, under the page, when it’s a WIP. Even when the coloring is so far ahead, we’d probably never guess unless he tells us 🙂

I love Vero’s coloring job, her attention to details (especially bringing out all of Adam’s small details), and how even an ‘unfinished’ coloring can look finished. It’s just that good detailed.

  • D. G.

Yay! Commander orders Kyle to run. Just like I wanted. I hope he does it. He’s changing and daddy’s offer may be too tempting to resist.

    • Ant-Man

where should kyle run 2 ? “away” ?
they r in the middle of nowhere – they r fighting a GIANT demon and they r normal size. the GIANT demon can shoot fire from his claw tips and apparently make things levitate and come to him with the wave of his claw- if what he’s doing with spooky is any indication.
      – how does a tiny, not in his right mind, kyle- run away and actually get away.

and how does a wall of water hold back an army of demons- is it holy water? why isn’t the hell fire turning it into steam ?

      • D. G.

The idea is for him to run anywhere. So long as it removes him from the situation, giving him precious minutes to process.

  • Toli Bera

uh…. why does Spooky disappear between panel 4&5 is he rippling between dimensions again?

    • Let:s say he’s hiding behind the speech bubble 😉

      • Skudplastr

Yeah, Laampros is pretty good at hiding things (i.e. his junk) behind normal comic elements

        • Kate G

          Like Shadow Pants!

    • Squishy

Somebody drop the ball? (Because he’s round)

      • Curt Clark

        booooo.

    • davefragments

I think Spooky is in front of Laampros and Kyle is to one side.

  • Squishy

I just noticed that Laampros offering his son protection and pleasure here is pretty much what Duncan offered Kyle. C’mon Kyle! Fool me once…

(Also I don’t think Kyle wants to feel anything of Laampros’s inside him, “might” or otherwise)

    (P.S. sorry)

    • Squishy

Also, for non U.S. readers I am referring to the saying “fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me” I’m not sure how universal that saying is

      • Ember

I believe it is a pretty prevalent saying here in the U.S. too. I’ve heard it, at least.

        • Squishy

Yes, I’m from the U.S. the note was to help readers not from the U.S. (if needed)

          • Ember

            ooooh. xD I’m an idiot.

  • Vaira

This is not a moment when you wonder if Kyle can snap out of his demonic powers. This is the moment to smack him across the head, drag him out and apologise later. And smack Spooky too, so he can let go of those souls, sorry, and get back to pushing Laamparos back to his world.

    • Curt Clark

My theory is that Kyle’s powers are HIS powers to use as he sees fit, he just needs to actualize it and stop listening to his father’s claptrap.

      • Vaira

Very probable. The problem is it’s not easy to just snap out of what giant powerful demon is telling him, especially when this demon is his sperm-giver [because I wouldn’t call him father]. So smack now and actualize later. Otherwise he may hurt someone. Or stand in the way of saving the world like some soul muncher is.

  • camelotcrusade

Maybe Kyle should temporarily get a new code name: Red Hot Lust. And a new power card. And pinup. And demonstration.

  • Squishy

So people are commenting that they like the WIP look and I see the appeal, but I LOVE the detail that Veronica usually puts into coloring the fire and water. I think it would be one thing if the style change was intentional, but I find this a bit jarring in contrast to the dark colors of the previous pages.

    • Kate G

Oh, I love the detail too, don’t get me wrong, it’s beautiful. I love seeing how pages are made. The process is interesting and every artist is a little different. It just so happens Veronica’s initial coloring is a flat, 1980s Last Unicorn vibe which I find very cool. Compared to her finished pages, yes, it’s jarring, but it doesn’t make it any less beautiful to me. I love “retro” (as some call it. 1980s is not retro to me; I was, after all, born in the 80s. I’m sure this is what my grams said when I said her clothes were retro.) animation.

  • Keinett Rodriguez

¿How come amanda is still alright even after laampros made her brain literally break apart?

    • Алексей Широколава

Well, currently the Demon King seems to be the most reasonable and less agressive of all presented…

It seems that they just start from really bad point. Instead of immediately going into battle, they should prepare the discussion table and some good coffe, and discuss all questions politely. At least it would bev utterly hilarious)

      • Curt Clark

I’d imagine half the questions directed at Laampros would be, “Could you put some clothes on? PLEASE?!” Probably mostly from Kyle.

    • Mary Klemzak

Reason 1:She’s stronger and more in control. That’s why she’s Commander.

Reason 2:Lampy is distracted talking to Kyle, therefore, possible window to get through to Kyle.

    • timemonkey

Probably because she only received the equivalent of a psychic slap?

  • Curt Clark

I thought the colors looked strange. Not BAD by a long shot, just strange. I could see minimalist pieces using this style going on TYP merch.

When it comes to the comic itself, however, I adore the details and vividness that go into the finished product. Though this is neat to look at and the comic is still up on time, I’m glad it’s not permanent.

  • KiannaLeigh

Gotta give Lampy props thou. In his own evil way, he loves his kid. In his own weird, completely evil way.

    • davefragments

Yeah, he roars through the gateway screaming “finally, the world is mine” and suddenly takes a sideways jog and begins acting like a doting Father.

      • Hikaru Takemori

Since I read the book series The Foreigner by C.J. Cherryh I have it a bit harder to just assume the emotions behind actions.
It is a long series in which Humans and Atevi live on the same planet. They started out assuming the emotions and reasons behind actions must be the same, on both sides, which led to war and eventual peace. Troughout the series the reader is reminded that Atevi do not love, they have man’chi which has overlap with love in the actions it inspires but can not be understood by someone who does’t have it.

So I caution you: Laampros might be incapable of love, but what he does looks like it

        • davefragments

I haven’t read that book. Interesting observation.
          Thanks

      • David Welbourn

“After five thousand years, I’m free! It’s time to conquer Earth!”
“Anni, Laampros has escaped! Bring me five teenagers with attitude!”

  • Squishy

Ok, maybe it’s just my imagination because we had to wait for it… but I really love the final coloring on this page. Especially the ominous orange glow in the background because of the fire. It adds to the atmosphere of the scene. I think if it was used on previous pages it wasn’t as pronounced as it is here.

  • TwilightDreamer

This is tugging at the heart strings!! DX

  • Mary Klemzak

    But dad… I want him(Spooky). He’s my best friend.

Also, I didn’t mean to hurt Fluke. He’s also my best friend.

  • Zephyr10101

As a tf loving furry, this is basically enabling me

  • Kate G

The fire really stands out in the final coloring. Veronica really outdid herself with the coloring; it’s gorgeous. The blues interacting with oranges and the darkness warping or bringing out those colors. It’s stunning.

  • Stubbylegs

Dad, I told you MONTHS ago: put some goddamn pants on when my friends are over!

  • Arkone Axon

I can’t help but picture Kyle’s father speaking in a deep, but gentle and benevolent voice. “My son… you can have pets. And don’t worry, you’ll have all the lovers you could want… and most importantly, I will protect you. Don’t worry, Daddy is here now.”

Seriously, I know he’s looking to conquer humanity and all, but… he’s really going out of his way to be a good Dad. Gotta give him props for that.

  • Karol Chmielewski

I know he is evil but I still can’t wrap my mind around how supportive Kyl’s biological pops is 😀 his accepting of pets, love choices wants to give him a good carrier in the family business of world domination but is very protective at the same time 🙂 the only thing that keeps him from being father of the year is all that mind rape xD

    • SchalaRenee

Laampros is a better dad than mine ever was, and my dad was human (I think)!

      • Klaus

I am sorry to hear it.

      • Keneu

        Seconded.

    • Klaus

Sad that such a small thing should bar him from his award.

    • Saxon_Brenton

I’m wondering if this is Laampros not so much being supportive as a parent, but training Red Hot in the ways of being a demonic despot whose will and whims are absolute. As in, being supportive of someone implies that this is the way everyone should be treated. But a despot gets privileges that no one else does. Certainly the way assumes everyone else is, at best, a favoured pet points towards this.

  • David Welbourn

Did anyone else wonder about that “human or parasite” phrase? From an earlier page, I thought that “parasite” was just Laampros’s name for humankind. Since Sircea once said that Earth was once “another ring of Hell” (see http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete-ch3-page-52/ ), I thought that maybe humanity had at some point created settlements in Hell and put up the Wall to turn it into the Earth we know and that perhaps Laampros resented humanity for that reason and saw us as invading parasites. (This line of thinking makes me wonder where humanity invaded FROM, of course.)

But now it’s “human OR parasite” and he commented on parasites almost as soon as he emerged from the gate. So does that mean that “parasites” are those with superpowers? Or is there some other distinctive attribute that the Young Protectors have that Laampros might see as parasitic?

    • EyeDontNo

Or “humanity” is relative. From Laampros’s viewpoint his people are human, and homo sapiens are parasites. Just a thought….

      • Squishy

But he says “let go of the illusion you are human” to Kyle, which makes me think that probably isn’t the case.

    • Shadizar Silvermask

I had wondered as the distinction (plus we’ve the third category: Abomination), it does seem like supers are what he refers to as parasites making them a separate category for some reason. Considering they’re more powerful than humans it makes you curious as to WHY they’re considered parasites, what about them makes them parasitical.

  • So, how is Spooky an abomination? And how could that be a threat to Kyle? Or to the all ‘my-son-the-damned-prince-shall-rule-the-underworld-with-mē evil plan of the evil king?

Laampros must have seen in Spooky that he can love Kyle back, even in his brand-new demon form. And don’t we all know that love conquers all? ♥

  • davefragments

This will take a bit to get to the point:
Before the gentrification of Comic Books into Graphic Novels, almost all comics were printed on inexpensive paper (think newsprint for newspapers) and not bond paper like novels or glossy paper like coffee table photo books.
And there was a reason for the number of pages in the comic books in multiples of 32. The printing plates held 16 pages front and back (that’s 32 pages on one giant piece of paper). A machine would cut it, fold it and stack it in preparation for stapling.
Because of the cheapness of the paper, the four color process used dots that almost anyone could see with a good magnifying glass. Too much ink can bleed through cheap paper. . . That limits the number of colors. That’s why certain villains were yellow or green or blue and looked not-pink. More than one human pink or flesh tone were impossible. Subtle shadings didn’t exist. And bleeds never happened.
This is what I meant in a previous comment that I can’t say enough nice things about the coloring schemes and the artwork. TYP is wonderful to read. It has full rich colors, All of the pages of Volume One bleed off the edge of the page, all of the pages of ARTIFICE bleed off the page. I just bought a copy of the latest literary graphic novel (Albert Camus’ THE STRANGER, a brilliant book) and it never bleeds off the page. Plus, it’s old school colors and drawing technique.
Each page to TYP excites me with its detail and vibrance. So much of the novel is told in the atmosphere created by the filled page. So much exists in the vividness of the colors.

    (yeah, that was long)

  • Jason Moon

So basically Laampros is saying “Stop being such a SISSY, boy! Act like a REAL man!” Er, in his own way.

  • Phyre Storm

If there was ever a time to barf a horde of angry souls in a demon king’s face…

    • davefragments

Sounds like a good idea to me…

    • Squishy

So are you suggesting that Spooky can’t hold his spirits?

      • FellowTraveler

Congratulations on forcing me from the shadows where I’ve lurked for many months. Your comment cannot go unacknowledged. But neither can Alex’s comic. A new year, a new fan, a new FellowTraveler.

        • Curt Clark

Welcome! I’m pretty new to these parts myself. Good to see another rookie!

          • stickfigurefairytales

Welcome to the both of you!

        • davefragments

          Welcome, join the fun

        • Welcome to the comments!

        • Squishy

Woot! Glad you are joining us. And very flattered that you appreciate my cheesy sense of humor.

        • Juliette Leroux

Welcome FellowTraveler! And Squishy, I just laughed stupidly in front of my screen reading your comment, so it seems “cheesy” is also my flavour of humour 🙂

        • You have now joined the Woolfpack. Welcome 🙂

  • stickfigurefairytales

Still no tail for Kyle, but I guess since Laampros doesn’t have one either that’s to be expected. Is he going to start sprouting wings?

    • Curt Clark

Laampros is holding the tail Kyle wants suspended in midair…:p

    • Phyre Storm

I’m sure Kyle will get some tail eventually. 😉

      • Ant-Man

LOL_ funnny_ and i hope he does- soon. lamp even tells him to use fluke 2 satisfy his lust

  • Sherika

I really hope there’s a backstory in the future about how Lampros and Kyle’s mother ended up producing a fire baby.

  • Facundo Viosch

I´m probably going to hell for this… But…

    PLEASUREPLEASUREPLEASUREPLEASURE!

  • Branyn

Lampros seems like an oddly good dad? XDD

  • Keneu

    Uh-oh. Amanda looks scared.

Leaving the unsolicited demon transformation of Kyle aside, Laampros seemed nice at first, but now it only seems like an authoritarian father.

L: This pet is an abomination, stay away from him!
    K: No! He’s…
    L: *throws fire at him*
    K: I’m telling you, I won’t…
L: *throws more fire at him*
K: Stop it already! I’ve never asked for this!
L: You will become a demon even if I have to spend the rest of the comic making you absorb my power. *drowns him in fire*

Not so nice anymore, huh? :/

    • Saxon_Brenton

Yep. On a storytelling level having Commander be concerned for Red Hot is a good tension building technique. She’s competent, doesn’t get distracted by melodrama (witness the way she handled the argument between her team on the plane) and has extrasensory abilities that allow her to asses the esoteric damage that is being done to Red.

Considering that she’s already tried to get Red away, it’ll be interesting to see whether anything else gets in the way of her attempt to get the team to withdraw and regroup.

  • davefragments

HEY, Hey, Hey — Last page of the year… Nearly, almost, last day of the year.

Don’t forget to use that extra leap second well. Those ocean tides worked hard to give you that extra second. Don’t let it go to waste.

    • Squishy

      Good evening!

      • davefragments

Good evening – How’s it going?

        • Squishy

It’s going well. I’m being an embarrassment to myself and everything that is right an sane but that’s nothing new.

          • davefragments

If you can’t embarrass yourself, who can?

          • Squishy

Patents, they can always embarrass you.

          • davefragments

            and always do.
One day, like me, you will remember those little things fondly. I hope

          • Squishy

I’m sure I will. In truth something’s I already do.

          • davefragments

I think you meant parents and not patents …

          • Squishy

            Probably

          • davefragments

            🙂

          • Squishy

Anyway I’m working on a project. I’m making malcolm reynolds pistol from Firefly out of bread and cheese. I was originally just going to use cheese but “You can’t take the rye from me” was too good to pass up.

          • davefragments

            Sounds like fun

          • Squishy

It is, also sort of ridiculous… but moslt fun.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            *applauds loudly*

          • Squishy

            XD

      • Squishy

        Well here it is anyway

        • davefragments

as Prof Frankenfurter once said – An-Ti-Ci-Pation

    • Just try not to remind 2016 about that extra second…it doesn’t need to know it has extra time to pull something bad out of the works.

      • davefragments

        That’s for sure.

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Definitely don’t remind it.

      • Saxon_Brenton

[sigh] It occurred to me earlier this week that it isn’t just that 2016 hates us all. It’s playing the part of a serial killer in a horror movie: Doing horrible things that upsets us and weakens our resolve, then stalks us one by one while we’re recoiling in fear and horror, and feeding on the fear.

[this, boys and girls and others, is an example of the literary technique known as the pathetic fallacy: giving human attributes and motivations to non-human and sometimes even inanimate things]

      • davefragments

In the thirty years I worked before retiring,
I worked for six presidents (From Gerald Ford to GW Bush) and every four years the policies changed, the funding changed, the organization changed with it. We will survive this. How do I know that? It all happened before.

        • Did you know that someone made a horror movie trailer for this year?

          • davefragments

            Yes. I saw it.
2016 wasn’t my worst year but it does come close to being #1.

          • Yeah….it was a rough year all around and we can only hope 2017 will be better.

          • davefragments

The future is always better. Trust me. Someday I will explain that.

          • well I did learn that the closest nuclear target is far enough away that it will probably only affect my internet….I probably should have saved that site and played a little more with different locations…and assuming the site is correct about these things, it was fun either way

          • Dartania

The webcomic Sinfest has the incarnation of Death/Grim Reaper hunting down the incarnation of the year every year. This year the devil ‘bamfed’ Mister XVI and made him evil because he refused to cause destruction. So then he’s hijacking the giant mecha that Devil Corp had constructed for Uncle Sam, and that’s where the comic is right now.

  • Dartania

On the one hand, I want to camp. On the other, I don’t want to waste time.

    • Saxon_Brenton

Difficult choices as to which thing to prioritise.

  • davefragments

Tonight is my second watching of STAR TREK BEYOND (2 day rental) and I can really say that there is lots of male ennui in this episode.
Now my second thing to say — it’s a star trek episode.

  • stickfigurefairytales

How’s everyone doing? Can I offer you some champagne or a sparkling non-alcoholic beverage of your choice?

    • Saxon_Brenton

Non-alcoholic for me, please. I’m one of the black sheep in a family of p!ss heads, and don’t like alcohol.
For my part, I have virtual leftovers of the passionfruit butter and shortbread pastries that I cooked for the family for Christmas. Help yourselves.

      • stickfigurefairytales

I’ll split some sparkling non-alcoholic cider for you. I think it’ll go well with one of those pastries!

    • Nice cup of tea for me,please.

I don’t usually get to camp, but I’m currently in a different timezone. 🙂

      • stickfigurefairytales

Glad you were able to be here tonight/whatever time it is where you are! Here is your tea – careful, it’s hot.

      • davefragments

Happy to have you at camping

    • Squishy

I have some beer already, thanks for the offer though.

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Cheers!

    • I’m doing a couple of alco-sodas today. Will be my second day this year that I get alcohol. Not something I do often, and when I do it’s mostly the orange alco-soda 🙂

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Sounds good. Enjoy!

    • *kisses stick’s cheek* Can I have some champagne?

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Absolutely! Here you go, love!

  • Concerto

Huugh in France it’s 04:37 I want to sleep. But I’m too curious I want to see what will happen

    • davefragments

      Welcome

    • stickfigurefairytales

Aww, poor Concerto! Will you be able to sleep in at least?

      • Concerto

Hehe… Let’s hope. But I think my parrot will cry 🙁 he Like waking at 8:00 snif

        • stickfigurefairytales

          Oh noo…

          • it is still too soon for me to see “parrot” and not think of Ace Attorney…

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Hahahaha

  • stickfigurefairytales

    Here you go, Dave!

    • davefragments

      Thank you.

  • ‘Morning from Denmark. Last day of the year has started here.

    • davefragments

      Hi Danishwolf

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Good morning, Danish!

    • Good afternoon from Australia. 🙂

      • Ooh, you are close to the New Year 🙂

I’m welcoming it, but almost afraid if this year has time to claim some more before it’s over.

        • Yes, I’m sitting here procrastinating on writing an obituary for my favourite actor – who also happened to be the person I’ve known longest in fandom. 🙁

          • I’m sorry for this 🙁

          • Thanks. It’s a very weird feeling – I only knew him because the first time I went to a con was because he was a guest and I was a fan of his work, but he became one of those friends you see at cons every year. And I miss him for both reasons.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            *offers hug*

    • Squishy

      Good morning!

    • Morning Danish!

  • Dartania

So apparently I can’t draw male faces. Every time I try to draw one of my male characters, everyone else looks and sees a girl.

    • stickfigurefairytales

Hmm, maybe you can look up some drawing references for advice on how to create a more masculine look? Or you can just stick with the bishonen look; that works too.

    • Concerto

      I have the opposite problem. I feel you bro ;_;

  • Adam Black

    late night

  • stickfigurefairytales

Getting hard to keep my eyes open. I may have to call it a night. See you guys tomorrow!

  • *kicks internet connection* It has some issues right now. Hope it’s over in a few, before the page will up.

    • Cman65

cool just sitting and waiting for the next page as I read a book on Sauropods

      • Dartania

Yeah, I’m working on putting together a portfolio of sorts.

  • davefragments

Star Trek Beyond (second viewing) ended and there’s a scene where Scotty screams something at the rest of the crew that not only scientific gibberish but completely incoherent in English. I’ll catch it tomorrow in the third viewing.

    • I really liked Star Trek Beyond. I’ve watched it a bunch of times. Great noise while crocheting xmas gifts.

      • davefragments

It is fun. The action doesn’t stop.
It’s a popcorn, beer and friends movie.

        • I would agree with that (save the beer because I just can’t with beer).

          • davefragments

Well any friendly drinks will do.
It’s a movie to have fun with.

          • Indeed!!

  • davefragments

If I said Patreon rumbles… do you delight?
I say Patreon rumbles and take care, things are getting darker.
