Artifice Page 17

84 Comments on Artifice Page 17

Ow, ow, ow…

So, we’ve had some different theories about the androids’s motives on Da Vinci Four. Does this page change anything? Anyone feeling vindicated about their own theory? Or are things still uncertain? 🙂

And what do you think is next for the last human survivor on Da Vinci Four?

Special thanks to Jamie D. for their generous donation this week!

Oh, and I just wanted to also say thank you to those of you who’ve taken the time to click on one or more of the ads on this site. I don’t get paid for clicks or anything (advertisers rent space by time) but these folks are helping to make this comic possible in a big way and it’s great for us to show them some love. (And in many cases, they are fellow webcomics, so they are actually a lot of fun to check out!) If you have a moment, please give at least one of them a click before you go, just to see who likes to support smart guy-on-guy sci-fi. 😀

If you particularly enjoy any of these pages and use Facebook, please click the Like button on that page. It’s useful to know what’s working and it helps me get the word out!

Awww he is so tiny by comparision… Dare I say… fun-sized?! XD Just started reading this and I love the it! Can’t wait for the next update.

    • “Fun-sized”! I LOVE it! Hehe.

Glad you’re liking what you’re reading. Thank you for letting me know! 😀

  • Hot damn, I have no idea, but I sure want to know. Don’t know where it’s going, but I love the ride. 😀

    • Hehe. Thanks, Judi! Really glad you’re enjoying it! 😀

  • Dex X.

I couldn’t help but imagine a robotic voice saying “Resistance is futile.”

  • I like how expressionless the android is while fighting. It’s a nice touch 🙂

  • love the hair movement. and expressionless? He looks more bored then expressionless to me. xD (which just makes it worse. pretty bad when the guy taking you down looks BORED about it. xD)

  • Oooooh, I wonder now if maybe the androids killed all the humans “For their own good.”  I’m with Alicia, though, I LOVE how expressionless the android is, and I kinda love how helpless the human is against him.  XD

    • Now, that’s an interesting theory. I’d like to hear more about it.

      (And glad you’re enjoying the power dynamics… 😉 )

  • ErrorTime

I don’t know why he thought fighting a robot would works…..I can’t wait to see what happens next. X3

    • I imagine he thought he just had to at least try… 😉

Glad you’re liking it! Thank you for letting me know!

      • ErrorTime

lol true that, and your welcome. I love the plot, what I really can’t wait for is the doctor’s opinion on this experience X3

        • The doctor’s reactions are one of my favorite parts of this comic… 😉

  • I love Deacon’s face throughout this whole scene. He’s just like, “dude, really?”

Poor guy, fighting a robot is never a good idea.

  • I’m still not sure what to think about his motives! I am loving this though, each update just leaves me hanging for more! Great job, both of you! <3

  • Um… thinks are STILL uncertain XD

… but we DO know what’s going go happen to this pretty guy with the long hair ;)What we all want to know is how their gonna get there and when???

  • snager

heh, my original hypothesis is only strengthened.
it’s like shopping for furnature: my first instinct is ALWAYS the end result, even after days of shopping.

my original theory being that these 5 androids where the dudes who desecrated an entire colony with their bare hands. why?  sentience probably. how did they get their hands so clean? intelligence, probably. how’s he gonna wind up making sweet, sweet fan service to this ginger?
well, clearly, he’s adorable and a really nice guy. :,D

    • LOL! Your comments always crack me up. “…making sweet, sweet fan service to this ginger…”

      Priceless. 😀

  • Ouch, he’s gonna be one big bruise! I agree with Hisoka Kurosaki on this one, he just looks bored.  I really like the fact that your action sequences are so clear and readable. You and Wynona rock as usual! 🙂

    • Thank you, Jamie! And you’ve called out something that’s very, very important to me. In fact, I think it’s the first duty of a comics creator—clarity. (To which I owe a debt to Scott McCloud for making, well, clear to me.)

It’s the main reason I go with a straight-forward grid pattern for my comics. And it’s of critical importance to me in an action scene. I can’t tell you the number of times I pick up an action comic and can’t figure out what the heck is going on. (I feel the same way about Michael Bay films with the super-fast close-up edits.) If you can’t tell what’s going on, it doesn’t “add to the excitement”, rather it makes it hard to get caught up in the story. IMHO, anyway.

So, I’m delighted that you found the action sequences clear & readable. That’s a huge complement for me. 🙂

      • Hey Alex, I likewise am a fan of Winona’s comparatively quite minimal styling (although, saying that I am very aware of all the fine, quiet details she puts in) and your clear action scenes — there’s no doubt as to the orientation, the sequence, the positioning…

I have come across a few exceptions to the straight-grid style that are strangely somehow intuitive and understandable, and the big one in my mind is an old, obscure comic book called Steampunk. Uh, Maybe it’s just me, I just read in the wiki that some people found it confusing.

For it’s lack of popularity, it had quite a bit of talent behind it (illustrated by Chris Bachalo) and I thought it was a fantastic work, the only comic book I bought every issue of (not difficult since they cut/took a hiatus at something like episode 12, probably because it was a side-project and didn’t get popular enough?) and probably the only comic (yet) you’ll ever hear me say I’ve loved.

Anyway, I thought it might be something you might find interesting to take a look at, for contrast to your style, and you might be a curious one who finds it as easy to read as I do…isn’t it strange how opposite the things we like can be?

        • Hey Michael,

That’s a very interesting recommendation! (Although I think your link might be broken. I think this will get you where you want to go:

The book sounds super-dark and disturbing, but well done. If the trades weren’t gosh darn expensive on Amazon, I’d definitely pick up the first one. 🙂

          • Hm, I never thought those words exactly. You’re right– the central story is a bit sick and twisted, but I actually found the whole thing quite fun, even humorous.

It’s a modern interpretation on a totalitarian, steam-powered Victorian England and in a lot of the character design and themes and technology etc. it’s really over the top and quite wild– doesn’t take itself terribly seriously.

Maybe one last small comment about this page of Artifice though– is that I’m not a huge fan of the “action” bits. The swooped lines that show movement look fine, but the “stars” that show impact just look very flat in contrast with everything else, especially with how good Winona is at drawing perspective, and how “3d” and “in motion” everything is, clothes, hair…I think inking/colouring in those impact bits might look better? or different?

          • Hey Michael,

I’m glad to hear that the tone of Steampunk is light instead of dark. That makes me want to read it more.

And I’ve also been wondering myself if adding an ink line around the action-bursts might not be a good idea. I’ll talk to Winona about it. 🙂

  • singerblooming

I want to see this banner everyone keeps talking about! D:<<

But ahahah poor kid– He wastes time throwing those barrels only to run into his persuer.

    ….Contemplating the different ways andriods can "recharge" (;

    • Ah, the infamous Artifice ad banner… Well, if you’re curious (and don’t mind a little bit of a spoiler image), you can look on my Links page to see a little peek at a different view of the survivor with Deacon. It’s on one of the banners I put up for people to use to link back to this comic.

But if you want to see the specific image they are talking about, of the survivor without his shirt, you can find it on the Welcome tab of my Facebook Page. It’s the first image I use.

And yes. Mmm. Recharging. For both humans and androids, there are lots of fun ways… 😉

  • I really really love how Winona draws hair. (There wasn’t an un-awkward way to say it). It looks so…so full and bouncy! That boy should be in a shampoo advertisement.

Also…nobody has said it yet, but Deacon is totally going to run out of juice!

    • Yeah, she does a really great job with the hair, huh? 🙂 And with this survivor, that’s lot of fun…

And yes, Deacon is running out of time………

      Thank you for commenting! 🙂

  • I get the distinct feeling, that the man running away from and into Deacon isn’t particularly strong… Doesn’t seem to be a soldier.

  • SteveMcSheffrey

So if the androids exterminated settlers with an alien plague or whatnot, then we’re looking at future tragedy where Deacon comes to love the last man he is going to have to kill.  Or going ‘off mission’ in that case could be allowing the man to live and we’ll end Artifice with a scene of Lone Ranger waiting outside the doctor’s office for his android boyfriend…

    • Ooo! I like those stories! Well done! 🙂

      • I fully endorse the lone ranger ‘off mission’ idea. death endings suck. xD

  • Rissicat

    Cliff Notes:
Deacon: … … (Mrrr, I need energy and someone’s gone and locked up the Distrib Console.)
    New Guy: HO-SHIT-ANDROID!!
    Deacon:  Why-Hello-There-Free-Lunch…

  • Can’t remember if I ever commented on a page before, but wanted to let you know you have another reader, found this comic a week ago (give or take) and love it! Can’t wait for the next page!

  • Elira Winter

    I’m loving Deacon’s expressionless face.

  • jejeje otra pagina mas de la que me acuerdo del preview

just awesome how easy to deacon left the poor scared little guy and everything is just beggining supar

  • Just to let you know, I’m glad to see that side of Deacon. What cute guy did to get Deacon so much out of his emotionless shell… to get him to see the doctor and explain everything ! >U< omg don't wanna wait

    • Awesome. I was hoping folks would have that reaction. Thank you. 🙂

  • HOLY Scott McCloud! haha sorry, was reading the comments and saw you mention that. “Understanding Comics”  changed my freakin’ life man! I couldn’t believe I had been waiting all my life to read that book until I finally read it =P Something I’d recommend to everyone!

Okay, my favourite thing on this page is the acceleration/ lack of action. What I mean is, I love how all of the action in the panels is happening on the side with the human, and yet there’s little to no energy on the side with the android. Not only does it remind me of his low energy levels, but it really translates to the viewer that this character is very much not human. It’s just doing so many things at once, I love it 😀

    • Hey Stephanie! Glad to hear from another Scott McCloud fan! 🙂 Yep, lots of love for Understanding Comics. (And Making Comics is excellent too, I think.)

You’re definitely picking up on the right subtext for the economy of action here between Deacon and the last human survivor. And what it says about Deacon. 🙂

  • Amazing! Poor little man is like “OMG IM GOING TO DIE DUEEEEEEEGH” and Deacons all like “LOL U MAD?”
Also Panel number 4 I think? Little man is like “OM NOM NOM”
This webcomic got me thinking, do androids have *cough* manly parts down under?

    • I believe in the case of this comic, it’s safe to say they do. 😉

      • Tharsonius

The android manufactorers are smart guys – they have to make sure their product is still sold if there’s no unrest/war. So… why not make them multifunctional? Make love if there’s no war 🙂

(and they just have to attach a sizeable yet simple part. After all, the steam-powered hips are already in place for the battle-stuff. Hurray for efficiency!)

        • Hello Tharsonius!

I see a bright future for you in NoNeCo’s marketing department! Please contact HR with your holo-resume and your government mandated DNA psych profile and someone will be in touch with you about setting up an interview within the following 72 hours.

  • This comment section is neat. I haven’t seen such a fun one on any other comic yet. It’s like a little comic book club down here. I really like seeing other people analyse and speculate, like “this guy really doesn’t look like a soldier” and about Deacon’s economy of movement since he’s running out of power.

I never notice things like that. Although, I did notice (doesn’t seem like anybody has mentioned yet) that our “cute little man boy” has a name– it’s Jeff!

It’s extra cool that the author is also part of this book club so that he can confirm, and hint and tease…

    • Hey Michael!

This comment section is neat! I think I have the smartest readers on the planet. 😀

      Nice to have you onboard!

    • A comic book club, eh? That’s a good assessment!

  • As everyone else has said, Deacon’s face is awesome yet hilarious. Nothing to see here, folks, just a robot beating up a man.

… that said, am I the only one trying to figure out where the flashlight went from last week’s page to this week’s? @_@

    • I agree, total indifference is defnitely the way to go. I hadn’t noticed the flashlight thing but you’re right…

      • shhh! thou must not speakith such blasphemy. >8( The flashlight is a lie.

        • Like he tells the DM, Jeff dropped the flashlight and ran like his arse was on fire. XD

    • I was wondering when someone was going to comment on the flashlight. He dropped it in fright at the doorway. 😉

(That’s my story and I’m sticking with it!)

  • nicely split….like it

  • Poor Jeff. That’s gotta hurt. D:

    • Yes, I believe it does.. But he’s not one to give up easily…

  • oh noeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! That “oh shit I’m so fucked face…. priceless!

    • If you’re talking about the 1st panel, I really love what Winona did there too. Lots of fun. 🙂

  • ChristineInCanada

Oh dear.  I do hope this…violent trend in their relationship isn’t something permanent?

Otherwise, a very nicely drawn and arranged page as always.  Extra vote from me on the pretty pretty hair movement!

    • The hair is lots of fun. Even though I love and obsess over all the details that Winona brings to each page, I actually hadn’t paid too much attention to it until reading the comments here. That’s one of the awesome things about releasing this as a page-a-week webcomic—thanks to you, I get to see each page with fresh eyes.

And will their relationship always trend towards violence? Ah, well… we’ll just have to wait and see, won’t we? 😉

  • Cheshirecaticus

Fearsome! War cry! (about as fearsome as a kitten hissing, ahah).

Oh man, I’d be terrified if I was him, with bodies littered around with various injuries and then the robot guy shows. Yeepp, terrified.

I love the script and art of this, the guide Winona helped me as a amateur artist wanting to do a comic – so yeah, so excited!

    • Yep, “terrified” is a good word for how Jeff is feeling. Absolutely. 🙂

I’m really glad you’re enjoying the comic and that Winona’s tips were able to help. Thanks for letting us know!

  • happysugarhunny

    Totally NOT a hippie!
    Beautiful art as always!

    • Hehe. “Totally not a hippie.” What gave it away? 😀

      • happysugarhunny

Call me crazy, but it is just a female instinct.

  • yellowrock

    Okay, so, not a hippie.

Surfer dude maybe?  Hippies would have a scruffy beard and a large talking dog.

    • The large talking dog! I knew I forgot to add something to this page…

      • yellowrock

I just had the funniest mental image of people yelling “Zoinks!” and the like during a sex scene.

You should do that in a comic sometime, Mr. Webcomic writer dude.

  • I’d like to know why there are so few females. Military/Research base maybe? Or maybe they’re a group of free-love radicals and the pushy government that has to rule everyone says ‘oh no you don’t. breed! *sends robots to kill everyone* >8(‘ Just my thoughts. xP

    • NoNeCo Industries is a firm believer in good breeding. In fact, we offer a wide variety of gene enhancement products that will ensure your children come out right the first time, every time. For more information on our products and services, please continue to follow us on this web site.

Thank you for your interest in NoNeCo.

  • Sharon Kerr-Bullian

I missed this update, so I finally got to check up on it the night after Wizard World Philadelphia Comic Con opened. It was definitely worth the wait 😀
    I can’t wait for tomorrow’s page 😀

  • Deacon totally doesn’t care that he’s beating the crap out of Jeff. At most, he looks mildly annoyed in the last panel that this guy is still able to struggle after being knocked around like that. I think he WAS actually going easy on Jeff at first since he needs him in working shape, but then when that didn’t work he dented the wall with him. 😛
Because he totally could have just snapped Jeff’s neck or punched straight through his torso if I’m interpreting the wounds on the dead bodies correctly.
