The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter One—Page 19

It amuses me that our awesome readers thought of The Platinum Priestess saying “Bibbity bobbity boo” before we even got to this page. She is so disney, isn’t she?

Oh, and a very important word TO THOSE IN THE UNITED STATES: many, many states now allow for early voting right now. You never know when life is going to get in the way and you might not make it to the polls on Election Day. The next president will very likely nominate Supreme Court Justices who will be able to make decisions about huge chunks of your freedoms including freedom of speech (like publishing comics with gay romance) and a woman’s right to choose, Senate and House of Representatives elections are very, very close and will make a huge difference in terms of what happens next for our economy, for our health care, for consumer rights and there are several very important measures on local ballots. The election is about so much more than who’s going to be President so even if you aren’t in a “swing state”, your vote matters! This is your time to let those in power hear your voice loud and clear. If at all possible, PLEASE GO VOTE THIS WEEKEND!

I’m hoping that Kyle is going to come to learn that being out as gay or even bi-curious doesn’t make for remotely as bad role-model material as accepting what amounts to sexual coercion/harassment instead, which at least on the face of it is what he was more comfortable with.
What are those masks for anyway? I thought that was the whole point of a secret identity.

You know, at first I wasn’t sure I’d be into this comic, but I think like… it’s the same trepidation I had when I first saw David Tennant as the Doctor. My brain was like “Different comic. I’ve been reading this story since launch and I have my suspicions about what Duncan is up to. He is a self-avowed anarchist and the foundation principle of anarchy is one is his own law and is responsible for his life, and the consequences of his actions. I have a sneaking suspicion that Relatives of Spooky in Hong Kong might see Duncan and Kyle together and thus begins a “downward spiral” for Kyle, a heroes journey where he must confront preconceived notions about others as well as himself. His behavior in the story so far embodies the “judging a book by its cover” attitude that he is afraid of if others find out if he is gay. Duncan might strip away all of Kyle’s hiding and force him to face reality. He must take responsibility for his life and and the consequences of his actions. This has the “noble intent, harsh methods” of Dr. Doom from Marvel all over it. An older, wiser figure working on the next generation while the mind is still young and receptive. Corruption? Possibly. More like enlightenment whether Kyle wants it or not. Wisdom or else, it has a rather nice ring to it…

  actually I think Duncan sees a lot of himself in Kyle, as far as who he used to be, and in a way is trying to stop kyle from “making the same mistake I did” by covering up the gay issue with over compensation. (becoming Annihilator to make the gay thing seem inconsequential instead of simply embracing it.) so in this way he’s acting as more of a sexy Shepard by giving him the chance to see the world beyond mega-opolis city and in a way stop him from coming down the same road by giving him more allies than he currently has.

    I think that Duncan is embracing it. Being gay I mean. Being the Annihilator doesn’t feel like compensation to me, just Duncan following his own path. Doing his own thing, regardless of whether anyone approves or not. Of course, super-villiany is sort of an extreme example of that, but obviously Duncan likes being over-the-top. I mean seriously, look how he’s going about his date. He seems to enjoy theatrics.

  I like the contrast in this story: that the villain is clearly ‘out’ and his equally villainous friend (I’m assuming the PP is not an agent of good) is cool with that; whereas our hero is terrified his equally heroic friends will find out he is gay and disown him.

Alex, I’m really loving this comic. I’ve already pimped it out to one of my friends!

Now I’ve got questions about the superpowers in this world, which I’m fairly sure aren’t gonna get answered any time soon. I was thinking about this comic while I was showering (as one does) and it occurred to me that Kyle is still developing physically – so it’d make sense that his powers are still developing too. I wonder – if that’s true – if Duncan doesn’t SEE something developing in him that he’s got plans for.

Also, tickles on the inside too? I have NO idea how Platinum Priestess’ powers work, but from the lovely angle I was looking at, it didn’t look like those tentacles actually needed a lecture on safe sex. So WHAT was going on inside of Kyle? Was Platty changing something other than his clothes? Or was he just reacting to the general magical aura of her power?

Bibbity bobbity boo… from Cinderella. The fairy godmother, who presents Cinderella with a prim dress and transport to the palace, sings an entire song where “bibbity bobbity boo” is literally part of the chorus. I know that not everyone has been raised on Disney films, but still, it’s pretty surprising that so many people had no idea where it came from. Everything that The Platinum Priestess has done so far in these past few pages has been an allusion to the fairy godmother in that film.

  Yeah but the difference between the two is that the Faery godmother was trying to help Cinderella meet her true love and is actually a force of good. Something tells me that Platinum Preistess is just doing this because it simply amuses her… that and it’s good blackmail for later on (both on Kyle and Annihilator). I thought that Her Holiness might be at least as tall as Anni, judging by the first few pages, if not a little taller, but it seems she’s a bit smaller, and Kyle even shorter than she is. the super villains in this world confuse me…so far they don’t seem particularly villainous…and i wonder if that is purposeful on the part of Anni. i feel like this story could get very messy and very distressing if Kyle is emotionally tangled with a villain who eventually reveals a truly nefarious side. i mean so far it’s just kind of like ho-hum snide commentary and trivial drama as the extent of the conflict.

what will happen when the conflict becomes much more serious than barbs about Kyle’s clothing or the conundrum of to eat or not to eat with an apparent enemy…

The small details in this comic never cease to amuse me. In the first panel, the one tentacle sneaking its way down the front of Kyle’s pants is incredibly, amusingly inappropriate and I love it. Though perhaps even more amusing is the look on Anni’s face in this debacle. Is that jealousy!? Hah! Sircea’s smug grin of satisfaction at the regally clad Kyle in the large panel is also just ace.

Since others have mentioned the amusing ‘voiceovers’ they’ve heard in the last few panels, I’d like to ask if anyone heard Kyle’s yell in the last panel with a kind of Max Headroom distortion affect, as well? Or maybe I’m just showing my age…

Anyone else a little confused at why Duncan is in black tie and Sircea just put Kyle in a regular suit? Also, it’s morning in Hong Kong, which would then make Duncan’s tux very out of place… SO MANY SOCIAL DRESS CODES BEING VIOLATED HERE. AND NOT VIOLATED IN THE GOOD WAY.

Re-reading this. Again. I seriously love this comic. I can’t really put my finger on why, But I’m gonna put my money on great writing and gorgeous artwork. Also, does anyone else hear voices? Specific voices for these characters? For me,

Duncan = John Rhys-Davies. I know he said he was from Brighton, but that Welsh accent just stuck in my mind.

Kyle = Will Friedle I just imagine Will Friedle’s voice for every teenage hero I think.

And Sircea = Eartha Kitt. She’s got that raspy sexy seductress voice.

And now I must go and figure out who everyone else’s voice are.

  Oh yeah i heard those voices too, but i imagined Duncan’s sounding like Sean Connery in the 60′s
