Artifice Page 15

Hmmm… I wonder what other things Deacon had to worry about?

Thank you for all the comments, everyone! Winona and I really appreciate hearing your thoughts. (I’m like obsessively checking this site throughout the day to see if anyone’s added anything… You are my addiction. And I love you.)

Oh, I’ve posted some new icons at the bottom of the Links Page! Be sure to check those out. (I’m curious, though—is anyone actually using them? Should I keep adding more icons or are you all not into that sort of thing? Let me know in the comments!)

And WOO HOO! We’re already past the half-way mark with donations for that extra page of Artifice! Special thanks to Betsy O., Judith W., Nicola O., Jonathan D., Lauren S., and Cody B. for their generous donations this week. And an big hug to Aubryn G. for their $25 donation! You folks ROCK! :D

If you particularly enjoy any of these pages and use Facebook, please click the Like button on that page. It’s useful to know what’s working and it helps me get the word out!

Donate For An Extra Page of The Young Protectors

A good reader suggestion here: donate to support The Young Protectors and get an extra page. Once $400 in donations are received, I will post an additional page of The Young Protectors the following Wednesday, making two pages for that week!

Intriguing as always! Keep up the great work!

Thank you! Glad to have you onboard! :D

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ODTYRNLPDTIZWUVMJBCDAFY27E DivaLady

Oooh, this is interesting.  I’m kinda wondering if Deacon’s gonna snap and bitch out the therapist.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_7Z3ZCWABUGNXJMV2PX62XJP2VA Katrine

That would be extremely unwise, though, wouldn’t it? Hopefully he has a bit more forethought than that? Looking very much forward to learning what is more worrying than the apparent scenario…

      • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

And you’re exactly right. Maven has all the power here. Glad you’re looking forward to what comes next! :)

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

      It’d be tempting, wouldn’t it? ;)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_W7TPEEJLZ2HPCLWN7VFQJRPBLM Amanda

One thing I could think to improve the site in general would be to have the latest page first, rather than the title page. That way someone can tell at a glance if the new page is up or not.

Otherwise, it’s all very good so far. Keeps me coming back every week to see where it’s going.

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

You know, I keep going back and forth about that. Personally, webcomics that start with the latest page aren’t my preference—mainly because I’m a nutball about spoilers! (Before watching a movie, I avoid reviews like the plague because it always seems so easy to guess where the plot is going and I want so much to be surprised!)

But I do know some folks would like me to set things up that way, so I am thinking of doing it. (Although I’ve also gotten emails from new readers who have thanked me for not leading with the latest page. Hmmm…)

Anyway, in the meantime, remember that you can always get to the latest page from the home page by hitting SHIFT-RIGHT ARROW on your keyboard. Not perfect, I know, but it’s what I do. :) (And of course if you follow me on Facebook, Twitter or RSS , I post up a direct link to the latest page every week.)

Thank you very much for your feedback. It’s really useful for me. And I’m delighted to hear you keep coming back every week. That makes me really happy to hear!

  • KBatty

I’m rather enjoying this story (and goregous artwork), but I’d like to take that condescending therapist and drop her off a cliff. Poor Deacon.

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

Hehe. Yep, Maven is meant to evoke strong feelings. ;)

Really glad to hear you’re liking the story and art!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-Harvey/100000484832525 Jessica Harvey

    Ahaha, I was right, sabotage!

Love the look on Deacon’s face – and the way he subtly slips in and out of the “robot”-speak. Compare “only operative remaining” to “booby-trapped”. Hardly an official term, but it adds an extra layer to his dialogue.

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

Yes, exactly. I actually thought carefully about those shifts (so glad you noticed!). Keep paying attention to where he does that. :)

Glad you’re reading so closely! That’s, of course, delightful for this writer to hear.

  • Finzz

Hm, I think she needs some sexy red lipstick to go along with her sensual hair style :D  Oh, and Rain + Fire = Emotion, right?  He’s lying!

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

Hehe. I don’t know if Maven is the sexy red lipstick type, but I definitely agree she’s got great hair. ;)

And Rain + Fire = Emotion = Lying? Interesting analysis. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that connection being made. Does that kind of analysis come from somewhere in particular?

  • LINCARD1000

If (well, hopefully WHEN) this is released as a trade graphic novel, I will so be buying the sh*t out of it :-)

Interesting characters, intriguing storyline.. what’s not to like?

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

LOL. Well, you certainly know how to sing sweet music into this writer-publisher’s ears! It will definitely be released as a physical book. In fact, I’m thinking hard about having a special limited edition with some extra features for the readers of this webcomic. I just need to figure out what extras would be most fun for folks…

Delighted to hear you’re liking it! :D

      • LINCARD1000

Very much so – you are exploring some rather interesting and, perhaps to some, controversial themes from what I can gather so far.  Deacon’s kinda hot as well which helps, being shallow for a moment :-)

Great to hear you will be publishing at some point, just make sure international buyers as addition to those in N.America can access it somehow though!

Quite like your comment above to one of your other commenters regarding seeing the characters in your mind being brought to visual life by a talented artist (Winona).  I am in much the same boat – I’ve written/self-published some stuff and had art commissioned of the various characters – rather neat to see them realized, and how other people interpret them based only on a written description :-)

        • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

Good point. I’ll definitely make sure the book is available for international customers.

Ah, and you’re a fellow creator! Yeah, it’s really a blast to see your characters come to life. I also have produced plays and films of my work and it’s much the same pleasure.

So, you’ve had covers created with your characters for your books?

          • LINCARD1000

Thank you – most of your readers and potential customers are probably located in the US, but there are a fair number of us who aren’t :-)

Do you mind if I ask what films you have had produced? Would be quite interested to look some of them up.

I approached an artist I had previously commissioned to ask if she would mind me using one of the pics she had done for me as the cover, and she graciously gave me permission.  How did you and Winona begin work together?  She is doing a bloody good job it has to be said :-)

          • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

Well, I’ve only made a couple films and only one of them is online (my very first film which I shot many years ago!). But if you’re curious, you can find it here:

            http://vimeo.com/7564592

And yes, I agree, Winona is definitely doing a bloody good job! :D I actually found her by putting an open call on Internet forums looking for an inker/colorist for my first comic, “A Shot in the Dark:”.  Even though I got dozens of responses, her work was head and shoulders above everyone else’s so it was an easy pick. And as it turned out, we had a lot in common and she was also fantastic at pencilwork as well as inks and colors, so when it came time for me to make Artifice, she was the clear choice. And it’s been a total dream working with her on this since then.

  • Henrithe9th

Other things…like the guy with the pretty hair? ;)

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

If you’re referring to a character I’ve teased in some of my banners, well, don’t tell anyone, but he actually makes his first appearance in the very next page…. ;)

      • Henrithe9th

        Wooooohoooo! I’m so curious :D

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5U7TTOP6BMZVB2CKTMNVN5QZQM Murielle

    I really love this comic.

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

Yay! I’m really glad to hear it! :D (Please tell your friends!)

  • http://winterlive.livejournal.com/ Aubryn G.

the two of you are a great team.  your dialogue is subtle and witty, and winona’s expressive, natural faces are expert at drawing out potential meaning behind the words.  the story is intriguing, smart, and grabs the hell out of the reader’s emotions.  great job, keep it up.

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

::blush::: Thanks! That’s just what a writer likes to hear!

(And working with Winona is a total dream. It’s like she can read my mind and gets me exactly what I was looking for—and then she adds her own brilliance on top of that which really brings the pages to life. I feel tremendously lucky to be able to collaborate with her.)

  • Rocket

Boo, I’m usually one of the first ones to comment, but I forgot today was Saturday ::D

his face in the third panel is intense like a mofo :O

For some reason, I think it’s cuz of his expression, but in the last panel, I can almost see him forcing back a fierce blush…

*sniff* Wh-what’s that I smell? A drastic turn of events? Hell yes :D

ILY, Alex! Don’t stop being awesome <3   (P.S. Were his eyes always green? I coulda sworn they were brown…)

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

I love your reactions to Deacon’s facial expressions! Yes, he has a lot going on in that artificial brain of his. :D

The next page does introduce an important new element to the story of Artifice that I think you’re going to like. Whether that’s “drastic”, I’ll let you decide.

Thank you very much as always for letting me know what you’re thinking! It’s a lot of fun for me (and Winona!). :D

(And Deacon’s eyes should always be green. Where are you seeing them brown?)

      • Rocket

Ah, don’t mid me, that was just my moment of color-blindness XD

His eyes were green the whole time, my bad :<

        • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

No worries! This is intended for print publication so it’s helpful to keep us on our toes!

  • http://twitter.com/Aijou Kie VonBaden

Never commented here before… but I always love how the facial expressions are so… powerful and yet always getting the really subtle ones as well. I love Deacon’s face in the last panel.

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

Thank you! I really like how Winona draws those expressions too. One of my favorite things about working with her is the “acting” of the characters she draws. Totally nails what needs to happen. :)

      • http://twitter.com/Aijou Kie VonBaden

         >_> I also like how you reply to everyone.

        • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

Hehe. My blogger friends tease me about that. But connecting with cool readers like yourself is actually my favorite part of doing this. ;)

(Second favorite part: seeing characters who’ve only lived in my head come to life through Winona’s awesome art.)

  • http://twitter.com/Alan_OBrien Alan O’Brien

When are they going to get to the gay parts >:(

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

Well, not for a little bit. But once we get there, with the way Winona draws things, I think you’ll find it worth the wait. ;)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MTUUTY3TD6PBMGTQQKHD6JCRYQ Kristin

Oh, I can’t wait for next Saturday. I just love how stone faced Deacon is, even after all the others died. However, I’m sure someone will eventually come along to ruffle his feathers. He is like the Terminator, except sexier.

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

Hehe. I’m glad you find him sexier than Arnold. :)

And yes, I do believe his feathers might indeed get ruffled in the pages to come…

  • Hiei-and-shino

Oh boy, this comic is delicious. There’s something so original in it that makes me access the site to see if there’s update every day!

Brilliant. And very, very smart. Hope to see more of it :D

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

That’s awesome to hear that you keep coming back to this site to check out Artifice. And I’m glad you’re finding it to be original and smart. Your comment has put a big smile on my face.

I hope to see more of you, my friend! :D

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_K52WS6HIGPL2QDWL34RZMXX3H4 Brad

Greetings.  Only recently discovered this web-comic and think it has interesting potential.  As a programmer who deals every day with bugs and how computer logic works, it is interesting to speculate on what androids might be like, whether they could pass, etc.  I found Blade Runner to be an excellent little thought experiment.  I wish you luck with it all.
    Cheers,
    Brad

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

Thanks, Brad! I hope that as you continue to read Artifice that you feel it lives up to its potential. :)

  • ladyaoi

The build up is driving me crazy I can’t wait for this story to unfold….btw the links page is a great touch I’ve discovered a lot of new comics I usually read only yaoi but decided to give American comics a chance and I am pleasantly surprised now I love it…yaoi will always be my first love but now I have Amer. comics on the side too..teehee yes I’m greedy give me moar!!!

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

Hehe. Yep, we’ve definitely got the slow build here. Something that I myself as a reader both drives me crazy and ultimately I find delicious. But I’m hoping that once things get cooking that you’ll find the build-up all worthwhile. (And on the very next page, the final ingredient in our yaoi cocktail will be added!)

Also, glad you’re liking the links page. I only add links to comics I follow myself and am a fan of so it makes me happy to hear that you’re enjoying them too. :)

  • http://www.probablyquantum.com probablyquantum

I second the kudos for your links page. You have great taste in comics; please add more if you find good ones! As for the icons, I haven’t used any yet, but I might like to see more later, especially if you get a chance to add an icon of the two male love interests on the same icon.

This page is just as wonderful as the others. The facial expressions are probably my favorite thing about the art. :)

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

Glad you’re liking the links! Yep, I’m just adding the comics I actually read so you’re getting a window into my own brain there. It’s great to hear others like the same kinds of things.

An icon of the two love interests? Hmm. I wouldn’t have thought of that. Thank you for the suggestion! (And I know just the ones I’d use. And I could put them up now… but no spoilers! I’d hate to reveal that the real yaoi is between Deacon and Roy the security guard- OOPS! I’ve said too much!)

And yes, I love the way Winona draws the facial expressions, too. The “acting” of her characters is always so spot on. She’s so good with subtlety, IMHO.

Thank you for your kind and helpful comments. (And thank you so much for the donation—it’s very, very much appreciated!)

  • k j

Thank you for combining two of my great loves, BL romance and sci-fi drama. I will be watching and happily look forward to what happens next :)

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

I agree! “Two great tastes…” Glad to have you onboard! :D

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Orihara-Izaya/100002480490703 Orihara Izaya

this is awesome thnks man ^^

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

You’re very welcome. Glad you’re enjoying it! :)

  • codobus

The way you cut back and forth between the past and present is very nice.  I like seeing what’s happening, and then getting not just narration and exposition, but a running dialogue on the situation.  It gives a good look at Deacon’s motivations and thoughts, without simply having them be stream of consciousness, which wouldn’t feel natural coming from an android(imho).  Very enjoyable

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

Yes, exactly! While it’s a bit of a risky choice—after all, it does mean scenes of two people just sitting in a room talking; I was very scared people wouldn’t like it—what you’re saying is exactly what I was hoping it would offer: a running dialogue of the situation, an insight into Deacon’s mind and, also, hopefully a way to build suspense. Thank you for letting me know it’s working for you! :)

      • codobus

JUST scenes of two people talking?!  Sir, this is Science Fiction!  While explosions and action are important, and indeed awesome.  Little is so important,(nay integral!) to Sci-Fi, especially that which deals with androids, than people talking!  The philosophy is essential, otherwise you’re simply making an action movie that happens to look futuristic, being vapid, and intellectually bankrupt.  Which is not what this is in the least.

(I get a little excited about my Sci-Fi, sorry for the excessive exclamations and insistence, I’m just enjoying your work! (: )

        • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

LOL! I stand corrected, my dear Sir. You are absolutely right. And if philosophical discussions are what will keep this comic from being vapid and intellectually bankrupt, then I can promise you there will be no shortage! I am a former Philosophy major, after all… ;)

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GR6CABBKS2RKY72QXHNLTA5SYI Enkidu

Plus you must never forget that you have a powerful artistic ally in the form of Winona, who can make scenes of just two people talking full of enough detail and nuance to keep our eyes entertained!

          • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

Agreed. It’s amazing what she’s done to keep these scenes visually interesting. :)

  • Diseasedface

What other things!?! I implore you! ~waits for next update~

Also Winona must have had a fun time drawing in all those tiny hairs on his head! Fantastic detailing! :D

And i also really enjoy the idea of an ‘artificial’ being getting too emotional and seeing a psychiatrist, as it parallels the idea that the artificial being is oh so very human, which might just make a point in saying, that we as humans are getting to be a bit to artificial in the way we talk, and function.

Perhaps I should go out and seek psychiatry from a robot! hohoho!

p.s. All those wasted robotic arms and head parts! I wish i could collect them all and construct something!

    ~A.S

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

And what would you choose to build, my friend? :)

      • Diseasedface

Some sort of monstereous robotic creatiion with a grin that would scuttle across table and floors and even tops of building depending on size. Hohoho.

Or perhaps a just as amusing but less exciting endeavour in building a sold abstract sculpturous object. Involving disected robot pieces!

  • http://www.nettiapina.fi/ Heikki H.

Oh man. Story was that short thus far, and I’m ready to get hooked. ;) Super!

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

Thank you very much! I’m glad to have you on board! :D

  • http://www.facebook.com/hannie3000 Hannah Koomans

    I have returned!

And don’t think you’ve seen the last of me yet. I will be back! D:<

In other words: I am eagerly awaiting the next page once again <3
The build-up is great; this is one intense therapy session. I do wonder what those other things on his mind were. Hmm.

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

Welcome back! :) I’m glad you’re liking the therapy session. Rather fun to write, actually…

  • Gregg Hierholzer

This is the first on line comic book i ever read, i was initially kind of hesitant to read as i didn’t know what the artwork or story was going to be, but the artwork is awesome and so far the story line is excellent, and i must stay for a comic Deacon is pretty cute.

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

Howdy! I’m glad you decided to give Artifice a chance. I’m also glad you like Deacon—you’re going to get to see a lot more of him. A lot more. :)

  • http://twitter.com/_3_LEMONed_3_ j.azzeh ♺

I’ll tell you what he was thinking, “shit shit I left the stove on AGAIN!”

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

      Hey! No spoilers! :D

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Coleman-Smith/558253212 Coleman Smith

I am a bit split on my opinion of this comic. I love the art work, the story line and the character thus far. I hate that I have to wait a whole week to see what happens next. D: Though, I have been seriously enjoying this and I know the week is to give you time for all your other projects as well. All I can say is keep up the good work!

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

Thank you! Very glad you’re liking it so far. :)

And yes, I wish I could post more that once a week, I really do actually, there’s so much I want to show you right now!  But it’s more important to me that I always keep my promises: that every week there will be a new page: no delays and no excuses.  For readers who sign on, that they will know absolutely, positively this comic will be there for them until the end! And at once a week, I know I can keep that promise.

All I can do is beg for your patience—and hope that you’ll find enough interesting here to keep coming back.

      Thanks again for commenting!

Nice… I`m a new reader, this comic is really awesome up till now. Good job.

and i like how Deacon resembles a professional killer. no emotions, just cold calculation. In the last panel he`s probably thinking “There`s no use to this ridiculous “therapy”.”

Thank you! Glad to hear you’re enjoying it. (And yes, I think you’re reading Deacon’s mind there…)

    Yes another page! :D
Do you post a new page every week on a specific day or is it just random? :)

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

Right now I’m posting on Saturdays. At 5:00 A.M. PST. :)

    Figured I’d finally stop lurking.
I have 29 comics that I check. Half of those I check regularly. And 8 which I will check every day.
Needless to say, I’m coming back to this page everyday JUST IN CASE.
Because out of the 8 I check regularly there are two which I love for the art and the story itself, not just the lulz. Artifice and Less Than Epic.
I even came here twice today. xD and I’m so excited every time there is an update.

It’s very flattering that you would put Artifice in the same company as The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ & Amal. ::blush:: I really love that webcomic—thank you!

And thank you so much for wanting to come here frequently, that really puts a big smile on my face. I hope that you will continue to not lurk and will keep letting me know what you think. :)

Yes~! I found this comic a week or so ago and then lost it because I shut the browser before I have bookmarked it. So excited to find it again and read the updates. This just keeps getting better and better!

      New page tomorrow!

When do they update this comic? This awesome!

    • http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/ Alex Woolfson

Thank you! It updates every Saturday.

(In fact, it just updated right…. now! :D )

What IS going through his head in panel 3? Maven isn’t the only one who wants to know. He has such a stoic poker face that there’s really no way of knowing, but he sees
    A) the flaming wreckage of his only way off this planet of corpses
    B) the scattered limbs and spilled white blood of what essentially makes up his ‘family’. His entire unit is dead and he has no way of leaving or calling for help, nor anyone who he could make a call for help TO.
Maven is right, he should be having SOME emotions. He’s human enough that it should be expected.

I wonder if inside his head he’s desperately calling out over the wireless link, trying to see if ANY of them are badly injured but still alive, and getting no response. How many times would he try to contact them before deciding to consider them dead and try to salvage the situation? We have no way of knowing. :(
